Winchester, VA - The No. 16 Messiah College Falcons (28-3) swept Shenandoah University (8-26) Wednesday afternoon with 11-0 and 3-1 wins. Starters
Courtney Allen (15-0) and
Carrie Fix (9-2) each picked up wins in the non-conference double header.
Game One - Messiah 11, Shenandoah 0 (5 innings)
Offense was in abundance throughout Game One as the Falcons collected 14 total hits, their second highest mark of the season, with four different players picking up two or more hits.
Carrie Fix led the Falcons with three hits while
Becky Notte,
Erin Cressman, and
Amber Bingaman each drove in two runs.
The Falcons posted a single run in the first inning then broke things open in the third, scoring seven runs to take the 8-0 lead. Messiah hit through the lineup in the third, collecting eight hits - seven singles and one double.
Shannon Denny and Fix both singled to start the frame then advanced a base on a wild pitch. Following a flyout by
Brooke Pompeo,
Courtney Allen delivered a sacrfice fly that scored the Falcons' first of seven runs in the inning. Following the initial tally, the Falcons mounted a two-out rally that resulted in a flurry of hits. Notte,
Amanda Jones, and Cressman each singled before Bingaman hit a double to left field. Denny and Fix ended the inning just as they started it with two additional singles.
Messiah's onslaught continued through the next two innings as the Falcons posted two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth. Notte, Bingaman, and Yannetti were credited with the RBI.
The Falcons' pitching staff was strong through the five inning, mercy-rule victory. Both starter
Courtney Allen (15-0) and reliever
Madelyn Yannetti saw time in Game One with the win going to Allen. In three innings of work, Allen held Shenandoah to just three hits. She walked one and struckout four. Yannetti entered the game in the four and allowed just two hits in two innings, while also striking out four.
Game Two - Messiah 3, Shenadoah 1
Unlike Game One, hits were hard to come by for the Falcons in Game Two. Messiah managed just three hits but also took advantage of four Shenandoah errors to claim the 3-1 victory.
Carrie Fix went the distance on the mound for the Falcons, picking up her ninth win of the season.
After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons broke the stalemate in the second, scoring a single run on two Shenandoah errors and an RBI sacrifice fly by
Erin Cressman.
The Hornets equalized in the bottom of the third on a two out single that was followed by an RBI triple from Lindsay Corbin.
The Falcons were back on top 2-1 following a one-run, one-hit top of the fourth. Aggressive baserunning and a walk helped the Falcons reclaim the lead. Jones got things going with a single and a stolen base then made her way to third on a throwing error by Shenandoah's catcher. In the next at-bat, Cressman walked then stole second to put the Falcons in a very favorable offensive position. Moments later Bingaman delivered what would have been the go-ahead run, but Jones was called out at the plate for the second out of the inning. The play didn't end there, though, as Bingaman drew the Hornets' attention when she continued toward second base. With the distraction, Cressman made the heads up play and broke for home, crossing the plate to put the Falcons ahead 2-1.
Messiah added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a pinch hit single from
Jordan McLain. Cressman, who singled to lead off the frame, scored on the play.
Carrie Fix was dominant from the pitcher's circle, allowing just one run on five hits. She struck out five and moves to 9-2 on the season.
The Falcons look to carry their momentum into tomorrow's double header with Albright College. The MAC Commonwealth double header is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. in Reading, Pa.
