Weaver Gets Tricky in Big Victory Over Colonels

Grantham, PA – Marisa Weaver tallied three goals and added two assists as No. 19 Messiah College rolled to a 6-0 victory over Wilkes University. Olivia Snare scored just 1:25 into the game to put the Falcons ahead early, and Kate Shults and Megan Mansfield also netted goals on the afternoon.

Snare's goal is tied for the ninth-fastest goal in program history, tying Holly Burgard's goal of the same time against Lebanon Valley College on Nov. 7, 2013.

The victory gave Messiah their second-consecutive victory and pushed their record to 4-2 on the season. The Colonels fell to 1-4 on the year.

Snare's early goal was a sign of things to come for the Falcons. Weaver dribbled the ball into Colonel territory on the right side and ripped a shot from just beyond the right edge of the six-yard mark. Her shot was saved by Alyssa Young, but the ball bounced off her hands and into the middle of the box. Snare crashed hard and tapped the ball into the net for the early advantage.

After the quick goal, the Falcons offense was contained for much of the first-half as the teams battled in the midfield for a majority of play. However, the Falcons' attack proved too effective as Weaver notched her first goal of the afternoon with eight minutes remaining in the frame. Kate Shults received the ball in the middle of the Falcons' third, and played a ball past the Colonels' backline to the middle of box. The pass met Weaver in stride, who took a touch to her left and zipped a shot past Young and inside the left post for the goal.

Shults tallied her first goal of the year just minutes later to give the Falcons a commanding three goal advantage. Sunny Gelnovatch had possession just across the midline when she played the ball into space for Weaver on the right side of the Falcons' attacking third. Weaver advanced inside the box to the end line, and crossed the ball across the six-yard mark. Young attempted to intercept the cross, but the ball snuck through her hands directly to Shults, who tapped it in to give Messiah a 3-0 advantage at intermission.

The Falcons again scored quickly into the half, as it took just 3:13 to tally the fourth goal. Gelnovatch stole possession on the right side of the Falcons' third and found Snare 25 yards out in the middle of the field. Snare then played Weaver into space in the center of the box, who touched twice to her left and rifled a shot to the left side of the net for her second goal.

Weaver finished off her hat-trick five minutes later to push the Falcons' lead to five. Erin Sollenberger possessed the ball in the attacking third, and fed the ball to Weaver 20 yards out in the middle. She spun left past a Colonel defender and ripped a shot past Young's dive and inside the left post.

Weaver became just the ninth player in program history to collect at least eight points in a single game by way of her third career hat-trick. Her last hat-trick came on October 21, 2014 against Hood College.

Messiah finished the scoring on Megan Mansfield's second career goal with five minutes remaining in the game. Gelnovatch again started the scoring opportunity when she gained possession in the Colonels' third. With open space ahead of her, the midfieler advanced up the middle of the field to the midline and played a ball past the Colonels' backline to Mansfield. As Young came up hard, Mansfield redirected the ball past Young and into the net to end the scoring at 6-0.

The Falcons' offense controlled possession throughout the game, which led to a 13-3 advantage in shots, including 10 shots-on-goal.

Messiah will return to action next Saturday, when they take on Misericordia on Shoemaker Field. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
