Grantham, PA - Four different Falcons scored on the evening to lead Messiah to a 4-1 victory over Misericordia Saturday night.
Sunny Gelnovatch got the Falcons on the board first, and
Erin Sollenberger,
Marisa Weaver, and
Megan Mansfield each tallied goals in the second-half to support the win.
The Falcons got a quick lead thanks to Gelnovatch's first career goal in the seventh minute.
Skylar Ulry had the ball just inside midfield, when she played a ball into space for the first-year midfielder. She got the ball in the middle of the field, took a touch forward and lifted a shot from 30 yards out that dipped passed Alyssa Pojero and under the crossbar for the early 1-0 advantage.
Two minutes later, the Cougars appeared to have their equalizer. On a ball played to the top of the box, Jenna Orfanos spun to her left and attacked middle. Orfanos looked to have a clear shot at the goal, but
Summerly Merson came flying in and deflected the shot out-of-bounds to maintain the Falcons lead.
Messiah continued to hold the ball in Cougars territory for a majority of the first-half, but failed to convert that advantage into another goal. The best chance came with 15 minutes remaining in the half when Weaver struck a shot that landed in the hands of Pojero. Weaver took five of the Falcons' six shots in the first-half, but Messiah could not build upon their early lead as they headed in for halftime.
After the break, the Falcons came out firing and scored less than four minutes into the half. Gelnovatch played a ball deep down the left sideline for Weaver, who attacked to the end line and sent a cross to the middle of the box. Sollenberger was there to head the ball back to the left post, but multiple Cougars were there to deflect the header. The ball rebounded back to Sollenberger, who used her foot to shoot this time, and her shot ricocheted off a defender and into the net to put the Falcons ahead 2-0.
Eleven minutes later, the Falcons struck again for their third goal of the night. Weaver got the ball slightly inside of midfield and began to attack. She made a slick move past the lone Cougar defender in her path, and then advanced to the edge of the box where she ripped a shot that snuck past Pojero and inside the left post.
Despite a strong defensive effort for the majority of the night, the Falcons were unable to post a shutout due to a Cougar goal with under six minutes to play. After a turnover deep in Falcons' territory, Orfanos got the ball and advanced toward the end line. Orfanos stopped and found Jacqueline Stevens just right of the penalty marker, who one-touched the ball past
Sara Yunez into the left side of the net.
Three minutes later, the Falcons tacked on an insurance goal thanks to
Megan Mansfield. Ulry possessed the ball just inside the center circle, and played a ball deep into space on the right side of the box. Mansfield ran underneath, took a touch and lofted a shot far post that got past Pojero to finish the scoring for the evening.
The Falcons held territory for long stretches, which led to a 17-8 advantage in shots on the night. This also marked the fifth time this season that they have outshot their opponent. Yunez also matched a career- and season-high with five saves on the evening.
Messiah will look to build on their winning streak when they take on Dickinson College Wednesday night on Shoemaker Field. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
