CHESTER, Pa. – No. 7 Messiah women's soccer scored three goals in the first period and never looked back in a road shutout over Widener on Saturday night.
Brooke Firestone put through the Falcons' first goal in the seventh minute, and
Megan Mansfield tallied twice to help Messiah pull away.
The win pushed Messiah to 9-1-3 overall, and also 3-0-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. Widener fell to 9-4 (2-2).
Quick Start
The game was not long before
Brooke Firestone put the Falcons up 1-0.
Julia Kyne collected an assist on the play thanks to a long pass straight up the field to her teammate. Firestone outran the Pride defense to take possession, and she beat keeper Sam Thach after she ran off her line in hopes of closing the play.
Mansfield's Field
Second-year forward
Megan Mansfield tallied her first goal on Sept. 20 in a 4-0 win over Elizabethtown, and with two more goals tonight she's up to six tallies in her past seven games. Her first goal tonight made it 2-0, and it came in the 32' when
Ellie Lengacher played a quick touch to Mansfield for a low shot past Thach.
Just over eight minutes later Mansfield scored against, this time off a pass from
Emily Lockwood. Her serve was deflected slightly by a defender, but Mansfield still took the ball to her feet for a 1v1 score.
Exclamation Point
Messiah's 3-0 lead held until late into the second period when
Julia Kyne put through one more goal. She took a long play down the left sideline, and she cut middle against a single defender before rocketing a shot past Thach from 20 yards out. The goal was her second in as many games.
In the Box
The Falcons finished with a 17-2 advantage in shots, and keeper
Lydia Ewing did not need to collect any saves. Messiah also attempted six corners to the Pride's zero, indicative of their stronghold on possession and territory throughout.
