Messiah Earns Split Over Texas-Dallas

SEGUIN, TX – The Messiah softball team earned a split on their spring break trip as they defeated the University of Texas-Dallas 7-4 and then fell in extra innings 4-3. McKenzie Tebbs was 5-8 on the day while Madelyn Yannetti went 3-6 with two RBI's. Erin Cressman had two hits, two runs, and one RBI in the game one and Isabel Seise had two hits with three RBI's. The Falcons offense was strong today as they cracked out 20 hits in total but did commit four errors on defense.
 
Carrie Fix (4-5) picked up the win in the first game but suffered the loss in the second.
 
Messiah is now 7-9 on the year and finish their spring break trip tomorrow with a double-header against the University of Laverne with the games beginning at 2:00 p.m. eastern time.
 
Game One: Messiah 7, Texas Lutheran 4
Messiah scored right away in the first inning when Amber Bingaman started things with a two-out single and advanced to second on an error. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Erin Cressman walked and then Madelyn Yannetti single to right center to score Bingaman and put the Falcons up 1-0. The Comets added the equalizer in the bottom of the inning and it was tied until the third when the Falcons added two more runs.
 
Cressman hit a single with two outs and then Yannetti ripped a double to center field to score a run. Then Isabel Seise single and pinch runner Morgan Zimmerman scored as Messiah took a 3-0 lead. Texas-Dallas added a run in their half of the inning, but then Messiah put another one up in the fourth to keep a two-run advantage.
 
Later in the fifth with the Falcons leading 5-2, the Comets scored two runs to cut the lead 5-4 but the defense was able to get out of the inning without further damage. Messiah added some insurance runs in the sixth thanks to a two-out single by Seise and the Falcons went on to win 7-4 as the Comets did not score the rest of the game.
 
Game Two: Messiah 3, Texas Lutheran 4 (9 innings)
Messiah did keep the offense going in the second game with eight hits and trailing late in the game tied it up in the seventh to force extra innings, but Texas-Dallas came out on top scoring a run in the ninth and then held Messiah to win 4-3.
 
The Falcons scored first in the second inning when Madelyn Yannetti walked and then Tiffany White entered to pinch run and stole second to get into scoring position. Isabel Seise then reached on an error by third base and White was able to advance and score on the error. Messiah added another run in the third as Carrie Fix singled to start the inning and stole second. Amber Bingaman grounded out but Fix was able to advance to third and then scored on a single by Erin Cressman to lead 2-0.
 
The Comets tied the game in the top of the fourth as the Falcons committed two errors that proved costly. After two scoreless innings, with the game tied heading into the seventh, Texas-Dallas scored to take a 3-2 lead. Down to their last chance Mckenzie Tebbs hit a single to start things off and advanced when pinch hitter Kyla Caruso grounded out. Tebbs advanced to third on the second out, a grounder by Samantha Esper, but with two outs Fix came up big with a single to center to tie the game and force extra innings.
 
The international rule was in effect for extra innings and Messiah had an opportunity in the eighth but couldn't capitalize as they left two runners on base. Then in the ninth, the Comets added a run to take a 4-3 lead and as Seise was placed on second, the three hitters for Messiah were retired in order to end the game.
