Falcons Hold Off Blazers, Take Two Close Games

FREDERICK, Md. - The Messiah women's softball team won two one-run games against Hood, 4-3 in the first game and 3-2 in the night cap. Carrie Fix reached a career milestone eclipsing the 200 career-hits mark becoming the fifth Falcon in program history to do so. She went 5-8 on the day with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI. In the second game Samantha Esper went 2-3 with an RBI and McKenzie Tebbs was 2-2 with a run scored.

With the wins Messiah improves to 13-9 on the year and 4-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. They are back in action on Monday Apr. 2 hosting Alvernia in a double header beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Game One: Messiah 4, Hood 3
In the first game the Falcons were down 2-1 heading into the sixth but scored two runs and then held the Blazers the rest of the game to win. Carrie Fix got things started in the first inning with a single and then stole second to get into scoring position. After being advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Haylee Anders, Fix scored on a RBI ground out from Amber Bingaman. In the top of the third with one out, Fix hit a home run, and also reached the 200-hit mark with that swing, to put Messiah up 2-0.

The Blazers responded in their half of the inning by scoring two runs off three hits to tie the game 2-2. Then in the bottom of the fourth they managed to take the lead when the offense was able to string together some hits and scored on an RBI single by Sophia Leaman. Stil trailing 3-2 heading into the sixth inning, Bingaman got things going for the Falcons with a single and then pinch runner Morgan Zimmernan stole second. Erin Cressman stepped up a delivered a RBI double and then advanced to third on the next play. Ashley Petersen then put one to the right side of the field which allowed Cresman to scored from third and Messiah to regain the lead 4-3.

The defense held Hood in both the sixth and seventh inning, even though they got two runners on base, they were unable to score as Messiah won 4-3.

Game Two: Messiah 3, Hood 2
The second game played out rather similar to the first except that Messiah jumped to a 3-0 lead and even as Hood tried to cut it down, the Falcons held on to win 3-2. In the top of the second McKenzie Tebbs and Nicole Kreimer both drew walks and then the double steal was on as they got into scoring position. Samantha Esper hit a single to score Tebbs and then Nicole Kreimer scored as the defense tried to get Esper when she continued on to second base.

The Falcons added another run in the third as Erin Cressman doubled with one out and then Isabel Seise hit a single. With runners at second and third, Petersen stepped up and punched it to the right side again allowing Cressman to score and put Messiah up 3-0. Hood made some noise in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kristy Erfurdt hit a two-run homer to cut the lead 3-2, however after that hit, pitcher Joy Kolakowski was able to get out of the inning unscathed. The next opportunity for the Blazers came in the fifth when they had the bases loaded with two outs and a chance to tie the game but Kolakowsi stayed composed and ended the inning by forcing hitter Leaman to pop up to third for out number three.

In the bottom of the seventh with Messiah still leading 3-2, Hood once again had an opportunity when Caitlin Gosline reached on an error and then Kristen Scott singled with two outs. The next batter was Kristy Erfurdt who hit a home run earlier in the day and the decision was made to intentionally walk her and load the bases. Pitcher Joy Kolakowski again was able to retire the final batter of the game by way of a pop up to third base and aid the Falcons in the sweep over the Blazers.
