GRANTHAM, Pa. - Messiah women's lacrosse opened the second-half on a 7-1 run to pull away from Albright College on Saturday afternoon and win by a final score of 14-7.
Before the game,
Audrey Liberati,
Kendra Herbenar,
Courtney Wagner,
Grace Munford,
Michelle Krenzke, and
Kylie Hornbarger were honored along with their parents for their contributions to the program over the past few seasons.
Wagner would have a great day once the game started as well, leading the team with four goals and adding three assists.
Annika Johnsen added three goals and
Mckenna Edwards one goal and two assists to help the Falcon effort.
Amber Orner and
Jessie Lissner were both impressive in goal, as Orner saved four shots and Lissner eight. Messiah outshot Albright 40-29 (29-19 on goal) in the game and was a perfect 17 for 17 in clears, while the Lions failed on six clear attempts.
Johnsen and Wagner got the Falcons off to a good start with goals in the first seven minutes to put Messiah up 2-0 early. Albirght came to play, though, as the Lions responded with two goals of their own over the next four minutes to tie it at the 19:43 mark of the first-half. Edwards and Albright's Kelly Baumann then traded scores to make it 3-3 with just over ten minutes remaining in the opening period.
Michelle Krenzke broke the tie with her seventh goal of the season three minutes later, and two more goals from Wagner and
Jamie Bishop before halftime gave the Falcons a 6-3 lead at the break.Â
Johnsen made it four in a row for Messiah three minutes after halftime, but Devon Mela scored for the Lions just over a minute later to cut the Falcon lead back down to three. At the 21:07 mark, Wagner found Bishop for her second goal of the game, and the floodgates were opened as Messiah tallied seven unanswered goals over the next 12 minutes to take a 14-4 lead with 9:19 to play. The final goal of that stretch was nothing short of spectacular, as Wagner fired a shot from straightaway that was saved and deflected back by Lion keeper Terae Mason, but was able to pluck the rebound out of midair and immediately fire it right back into the net for the score a split second later.Â
Albright showed that they would not quit, going on a 3-0 run to close the game, but it would be far too little, too late as Messiah took the 14-7 victory.
The Falcons improve to 7-0 in the MAC Commonwealth and 12-3 overall, and will now travel to Alvernia University on Tuesday for the final game of the regular season. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
