Messiah Edged By No. 10 Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -  The Messiah College men's volleyball team traveled to Vassar College on Friday evening to take on the 10th-ranked team in the nation. The Falcons fell to the Brewers 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-22) and moved to 14-9 overall.

The Falcons only hit a .192 on the match, however in the third set they hit a game high of .259 after collected 10 kills and only three errors on 27 attempts. The Brewers were efficient offensively and hit a .412 after they collected 48 kills on 85 attempts and committing 13 errors.

Brad Nase delivered 23 assists and Travis Hoover led the Falcons offensively with eight kills. Matt Knab terminated seven kills, while Noah Shreiner added five. Matt Knab also led his squad with three blocks and six digs.

The Falcons started out trailing 3-0 early in game one, however Logan Hunsberger was able to side out for Messiah to get their first point of the match. The Brewers then took off on a 12-to-3 run past the Falcons to hold a 15-4 advantage. Both teams exchanged points back and forth but Vassar's consistency and aggressive attack allowed them to hold a large advantage over the Falcons (19-8). The Falcons were able to piece together a two-point run to pull within nine points of the lead (20-11), but it wouldn't be enough and the Brewers took set one, 25-16.

Messiah started the second set off strong and tied things up 4-4 after an ace from Travis Hoover. Vassar began to gain some momentum but Noah Shreiner had a dominant swing in the middle to tie the game up at 7-7. The Brewers pieced together a 4-to-1 run to pull ahead once again. After trailing 11-8, Messiah found generated some momentum of their own and took off on a 5-to-0 run over the Brewers to take a 13-11 lead. Logan Hunsberger started this run by collecting back-to-back aces from the service line. Vassar battled back and tied the game at 15-15 and then scored three-consecutive points to pull ahead 18-15, which forced Messiah to call a timeout. The Brewers came out of the timeout and continued to stay on top, they won game two 25-19.

Messiah opened up the third set with a 3-1 lead over the Brewers after back-to-back Vassar errors and a kill from Jarred Sands. However, the Brewers went on a 6-to-3 scoring run to take a 7-6 lead. Both teams battled back-and-forth throughout the middle of the set and the game was tied at 13-13. Vassar scored three-consecutive points to pull ahead 16-13 but after an error from the Brewers and an ace from Noah Shreiner, Messiah brought the lead down to one point (16-15). Vassar went on a 3-to-1 scoring spree to pull ahead (19-16) but they then committed two errors and the Falcons were still in it. The Falcons came within one-point of the lead (23-22) after a service error by Vassar, but the Brewers were able to pick up back-to-back kills to secure the 25-22 victory.

The Falcons will return to the court tomorrow when they travel to Misericordia University for their final regular season conference match. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
