Falcons Dominate Warriors, Win Big

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah women's lacrosse team dominated Lycoming College today winning by double digits 17-7. Madi Morris and Annika Johnsen both led the team with three goals, while four other players; Courtney Wagner, Jamie Bishop, Abby Munson, and Katelyn Pearson all had two scores on the day. All together nine different players tallied goals to aid the Falcon offense.

Messiah collected more ground balls (23-17), had double the shots (40-18), and went 16-24 on draw controls. Audrey Liberati led with seven draw controls and Kendra Herbenar had five on the day. With the win the Falcons are now 8-3 on the year and 3-0 in the MAC Commonwealth and will return to action next Wednesday Apr. 11 when they travel to Widener for a 7:00 p.m. game.

The first two minutes were full of offense for Messiah as they jumped to a quick 3-0 lead scoring three goals in 41 seconds. Madi Morris tallied the first goal of the game just 1:41 into the game and Annike Johnsen followed up with goal two 32 seconds later and goal three just nine seconds after that. Courtney Wagner provided the assists for both of Johnsen's goals bringing her season assist total to 24.

Five minutes later Katelyn Pearson caused a turnover on the defensive end and after picking up the ground ball found the back of the net down the field extending the Falcon lead 4-0. Lycoming scored their first goal at the 19:56 mark but Messiah quickly responded at the other end as Morris scored her second goal on a free position shot to make the score 5-1.

The Messiah offense stayed hot and the Lycoming defense struggled to handle their attack. After a shot by Courtney Wagner was saved, she picked up the ground ball and tossed it to McKenna Edwards who put one past the goalie for the sixth goal. Not long after at the 17:37 mark Abby Howard scored her ninth goal of the season keeping the domination going.

The Falcons' lead kept building and they reached the double-digit mark with 8:47 left in the half when Jamie Bishop scored on an assist from Jessica Hatch. The Warriors earned a free position shot and Kayla DiJoseph scored on the attempt and then one minute later Kelly McGinnis added a goal for Lycoming to cut the lead 11-3. Bishop struck again with a goal and then Jessica Hatch added one more with 1:35 left in the half to put Messiah back up 13-3 and that was the score heading into halftime.

The second half went a little differently than the first as the Messiah offenses slowed down a little, although they did add four more goals to their total. Lycoming scored first at the 28:18 mark but less than a minute later Katelyn Pearson scored her second goal of the game as the score was 14-4.  Madi Morris added goal number 15 on a free position shot with 24:57 to play and then Hailey Kimble of Lycoming scored number five for the Warriors at the 17:33 mark.

After scoring another goal to increase the lead 16-6, Lycoming scored with 6:13 left but then the next goal didn't come until 56 seconds left in the game, which the Warriors scored. The Falcons had to add one final goal, however, as Abbi Munson tallied the final goal of the game, again assisted by Courtney Wagner, with just 30 seconds left.
