GLENSIDE, Pa. - After a scoreless first period that saw the Falcons take four shots and earn three penalty corners, Messiah tallied one goal in the second period and two in the third to secure the 3-1 road-win over the Arcadia Knights.
The Falcons controlled the run of play for the majority of the contest, outshooting the Knights 16 to seven, putting 11 on frame. Messiah also earned 10 penalty corners in the game while holding Arcadia to four.
Emily Knepp earned her first goal of the season in the 24th minute after picking up a deflected shot from
Josie Weaver and putting it in the cage. After the halftime break,
Josie Weaver doubled the Falcons' lead 1:14 into the second half after taking a pass from
Hannah Palm and beating the goalie to make it 2-0. The Falcons' last goal of the contest came off the stick of
Jess Davis who fired a penalty stroke past the keeper to take the 3-0 lead over Arcadia in the 41st minute.
The Knights put on the pressure in the fourth period with three shots and two corners. Their efforts resulted in a late goal with just 2.4 seconds remaining on the clock but Messiah would go on to take the 3-1 victory.
The Falcons are now 6-4 on the season and 1-0 in the conference and will take on the Gettysburg Bullets on Oct. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
Scoreless First Period
The Falcons controlled the pace of the game from the early going. Messiah worked their way through the Arcadia Knights' defense and earned their first penalty corner in the eighth minute. Messiah's
Taylor Wiederrecht took a shot 8:43 into the contest but the attempt was saved. Minutes later, Wiederrecht attempted another shot but this one was blocked. The Falcons' best opportunity of the first period came in the 12th minute off a penalty corner when freshman
Ashlyn Smith took a shot on frame but Arcadia's Sydney Cyr was there to make a defensive save. Messiah kept the pressure on with a late penalty corner and shot by
Nicole Shank but the period ended 0-0.
Falcons Strike First
Messiah had momentum on their side in the second period after the Knights were given green cards in the 19th and 21st minute. The Falcons first goal of the game came after
Josie Weaver put a shot on frame that was saved and deflected to
Emily Knepp who was there to collect the ball and slide it past the goalie to give Messiah the 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.
Extending The Lead
The Falcons struck 1:14 into the second half after
Josie Weaver took a pass from
Hannah Palm to double the lead to 2-0. Messiah took a total of five shots in the third period with their first one and last one finding the cage. Messiah's third goal of the day came from
Jess Davis off a penalty stroke. Davis stepped up in the 41st minute for the stroke and beat the goalie to earn her third goal of her career while giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead over Arcadia.
Late Pressure
Despite having the run of play with a slight 4-3 edge in shots in the fourth period, Messiah was on their heels in the closing minutes of the contest. The Knights recorded three shots in the last 5:18 of the contest.
Megan Bomba saved the first one in the 55th minute but with 2.4 seconds left in the contest, the Knights tallied their only goal of the game.
