WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Messiah women's tennis team earned their first victory of the season Thursday afternoon against the Lycoming Warriors. Messiah found themselves down 2-0 after the first two doubles matches, but a forfeited third court sent it to singles at 2-1 Warriors. Messiah and Lycoming were all tied up at 4-4 after the Falcons picked up three wins to Lycoming's two in singles, but due to a forfeit at No. 6 singles, Messiah won the match 5-4 to move to 1-2 on the season.
In her first match as a Falcon,
Rachel Dougherty battled back to win her singles match against Haley Seebold (4-6, 6-1, 10-5). In lieu of a third set, they played to 10 points in a single game tiebreaker.
Rebekah Adams also picked up her first win of the year while
Hannah Olson picked up her second straight singles victory. The team will next be in action on Apr. 10 when they host York College (Pa.) in Grantham at 1:00 p.m.
Doubles Play
Messiah dropped the first two courts in doubles before a Lycoming forfeit at the third court made it 2-1 Warriors heading into singles action.
Singles Play
Messiah claimed the first singles match when
Rachel Dougherty picked up a win at No. 5 over Emily Wolfgang (4-6, 6-1, 10-5). As mentioned, instead of a third set, they played a single game to 10 for the tiebreaker. This made it 2-2, before the Warriors won a tightly contested match at No. 1 to go back up 3-2.
Rebekah Adams tied it back up with a straight set win over Madi Heller at No. 2. Lycoming would go back up 4-3 after a win at No. 3, but
Hannah Olson claimed an 8-3 win at No. 4 to make it 4-4. Olson was forced to play a single eight game pro set due to time constraints. However, Lycoming forfeited the sixth court to give Messiah the 5-4 victory and give them their first win of the season.
What's Up Next
Messiah will look to avenge their 8-1 defeat at the hands of the York College (Pa.) Spartans back on Mar. 20 when they host York on Apr. 10 for their next match in Grantham at 1:00 p.m.
