GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Messiah women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision against the Alvernia Golden Wolves on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons picked up wins at No. 2 Doubles and No. 2 Singles, but ultimately fell in the match. Messiah's duo of
Rachel Marcroft and
Rebekah Sheaffer earned an 8-5 victory at No. 2 Doubles and
Rebekah Adams won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) at No. 2 singles to highlight the day for the Falcons.
Messiah falls to 1-4 with the setback and will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Stevenson to take on the Mustangs at 1:00 p.m.
Doubles Play
After dropping court one, the Falcons fought back with the aforementioned 8-5 win by
Rachel Marcroft and
Rebekah Sheaffer on court two.
On court three,
Sarah Fleming and
Angela Tozzi held a 7-4 advantage, but Rachel Rineer and Jackelyn Checo fought back to make it 7-7. After a close tiebreaker, Rineer and Checo pulled away late to take it 7-4 and ultimately win the match 8-7. This sent it to singles play with Alvernia leading 2-1.
Singles Play
The Falcon and Golden Wolves split courts one and two of singles with
Rebekah Adams winning in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) on the second court to make it 3-2 Alvernia. Unfortunately for Messiah, that was as close as they would get.
Despite some close matches, particularly with
Rebekah Sheaffer on court four, Messiah dropped the remaining four courts to lose the match 7-2. Sheaffer split the first two sets, before falling in a close tiebreaker after the match was already decided.
What's Up Next
After the loss, Messiah drops to 1-4 overall on the season. They will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Owings Mills, Md. to take on the Stevenson Mustangs at 1:00 p.m.
