Falcons Hang Tough, Fall to Mustangs

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Messiah women's tennis team hung tough with the Stevenson Mustangs on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately dropped a 6-3 decision to the Mustangs. Messiah claimed court two in doubles play thanks to a tiebreak winner from the team of Rachel Marcroft and Rebekah Sheaffer. In singles play, Messiah picked up a pair of points at No. 2 and No. 6 singles with victories by Rebekah Adams and Hannah Kapchinske, respectively.
 
The setback moves the Falcons to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Lebanon Valley beginning at 3:30 p.m.
 
Doubles Play
The Mustangs were quickly off of courts No. 3 and No. 1 with victories of 8-5 and 8-3 to take an early 2-0 lead in the team score. The third point would have to wait as the Falcons battled their way to a win at No. 2 doubles with Rachel Marcroft and Rebekah Sheaffer claiming an 8-7 (4) victory by way of a tiebreaker.
 
Despite, Messiah taking the final court of doubles play, the Mustangs held a 2-1 lead as the match turned to singles.
 
Singles Play
The Falcons tightened the match with a dominating victory by Rebekah Adams at No. 2 singles. Adams picked up the 6-0, 6-3 victory over Stevenson's Megan Waskiewicz to tie the team score at 2-2. The Mustangs responded with three-straight wins to clinch the match with their fifth team point. Victories by No. 1 Torienne Emery (7-5, 6-2), No. 3 Jacquelyn Nesbeth (6-4, 6-1), and No. 4 Esha Kashmiri (6-4, 6-4) earned the Mustangs the victory.
 
Messiah's Hannah Kapchinske earned a point for the Falcons with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Samantha Zudov at No. 6 singles and Rachel Dougherty was on the wrong end of a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 10-6 tiebreak at No. 5 singles.

After Saturday's action, the Falcons fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in the conference. The Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to take on Lebanon Valley at 3:30 p.m. The Dutchmen are undefeated this season with a 4-0 overall record.
