Falcons Trounce Golden Wolves in Home Finale

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Messiah women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-16) over the Alvernia Golden Wolves on Wednesday night. With the victory, Messiah improves to 18-6 on the season and 5-2 in the MAC Commonwealth. Wednesday's match was the final regular season home contest of the year for the Falcons. The Falcons will be on the road this weekend when they head to Christopher Newport for a tri-match with the Captains and the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets.

Mackenzie Feight led the Falcons with the 16 kills while Emma Swartz finished the night with 27 assists. As a team, Messiah hit .352 while holding the Golden Wolves to a .175 hitting percentage.

As mentioned the Falcons will head to Virginia this weekend for a tri-match before finishing the regular season with a match against Stevenson on Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m. on the road.

Messiah defeats Alvernia 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-16)
Messiah got off to an early lead at 8-5 in the first set which blossomed to a 18-10 advantage rather quickly. With 14 kills in the set good enough for a .393 hitting percentage, the Falcons closed out the set 25-18 to take a 1-0 lead. Alvernia would answer the call in the second and commanded the lead early earning them a 17-11 lead. Messiah rallied back and forced multiple timeouts until the score was even at 20. A Mackenzie Feight service ace put the Falcons ahead one before Alvernia took a 22-21 lead. The Falcons won the next four points to close out the set 25-22. In the third set, it was Messiah who would command the lead early and they kept that lead throughout the entirety of the third set. At one point Messiah held a 19-11 lead and would close out the set 25-16 for the 3-0 sweep of the Golden Wolves.

Stats
Mackenzie Feight led the way with 16 kills on the night and added four aces. Lielbriedis checked in as the next highest in the kills column with nine. Emma Swartz led the team in assists (27) and digs (9) on the evening. Anna Weldon and Julia Bowen each had a season high five blocks. Messiah hit .352 in the match with 44 total kills in what was an otherwise dominant effort against Alvernia.

The win brings their record to 18-6 with a 5-2 conference mark. The Falcons will travel to Virginia for a tri-match at Christopher Newport where they will play the hosts Christopher Newport as well as Randolph-Macon on Saturday, October 22. The Falcons final match will be away against conference rival Stevenson. That conference tilt will be on Thursday, October 27.
