Falcons Earn Perfect Mark in Conference Play, Eliminates LVC from Playoff Contention

GRANTHAM, PA - The Messiah field hockey team wrapped up their conference slate with a 4-0 win over the LVC Flying Dutchmen on Wednesday night. Madi Johnson added two goals while Carrie Bair tacked on a goal and two assists in the evening. Mallory Kline added the final goal for Messiah.

The Falcons are in the midst of an 11 game winning streak as their record improves to 13-2 and 8-0 in the conference. The Falcons will host William Smith on Saturday, October 29. That game will be held on Anderson Field in Grantham, Pa.

Action
The first ten minutes of action saw no scores but certainly presented scoring opportunities for both teams. The Falcons continued to threaten LVC but the Dutchmen answered with a close call of their own but it was Catie Brubaker who made the save to keep the game at a scoreless tie. With just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Kelsey Heltzel ripped a shot from the top and the ball caromed off the stick of Carrie Bair to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Madi Johnson doubled the score on a shot where she lifted it in the upper left hand corner of the net to give Messiah the 2-0 lead. That lead held through the second quarter with each team generating opportunities but neither could not convert any of them. On a penalty corner late in the second quarter, the Falcons had a great chance but it was just a better defensive effort from the Dutchmen to stop an Ashlyn Smith shot. The Dutchmen earned a corner with under a minute remaining but the shot went wide to keep the score at 2-0 in favor of Messiah at the half.

The Dutchmen had their chance with just under 13 minutes to go in the third quarter when they were awarded a penalty stroke to cut the deficit in half. The shot missed high and wide to the right as the lead remained 2-0 in favor of Messiah. With under six minutes remaining, Johnson connected on her second goal of the game to increase the lead to 3-0. Mallory Kline added the fourth goal on the night for Messiah with just over a minute to go in the third quarter. The score would remain 4-0 in favor of Messiah to earn the win on night. With the loss, the Dutchmen were eliminated from the MAC Commonwealth playoffs.

Stats
For Bair, it was her third goal of the season while Johnson tacked on her third and fourth goals on the season. Mallory Kline tacked on her ninth goal of the season, the second most on the team. Smith, Heltzel and Bair (2) recorded the assists on the night. Messiah dominated the shots advantage holding a 30-7 mark over the Dutchmen. Each team had five penalty corners on the night.
