READING, Pa. – The Messiah men's indoor track and field team competed in the 2022 MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Flynn Plex in Reading, Pa., Friday afternoon. The Falcons had an impressive showing in the 5000m event, sweeping the medals as
Logan Horst placed first with a time of 15:26.64, followed by teammates
Andrew Hutchinson (15:28.06) and
Noah Calisti (15:29.68). Additionally,
Brendan Provan performed well, earning a silver medal in the long jump with a mark of 6.98m and qualifying for the 60m finals tomorrow (7.10s).
At the end of Day One, the Falcons hold first place with a total of 41 points. Following Messiah in the team standings in Widener (34), DeSales (33), and Lebanon Valley (24).
60m (Trials)
Provan issued a strong performance in the 60m event, placing third overall out of 28 total runners in the field. Provan's time of 7.10s qualifies for tomorrow's finals as the sprinter placed first overall in the second heat.
60m Hurdles (Trials)
Andrew Schott and
John Steele each qualified for the finals in the trial round of the 60m hurdles. Both Schott and Steele ran in the first heat, placing third and fourth, respectively. Schott edged his teammate with a time of 8.78s as Steele crossed the line in 8.81s.
Joel Rhinehart ran in the first heat as well, earning a time of 9.69s.
5000m
The 5000m was the most impressive event of the day for Messiah as the Falcons swept the medals. Horst came in first place with a winning time of 15:26.64 as Hutchinson (15:28.06) and Calisti (15:29.68) followed, placing second and third respectively.
Kyle Costello also had a strong showing, placing fifth, crossing the line in 15:30.81.
Isaac Covert also competed, recording a time of 15:56.15.
Heptathlon
Matthew Puleo and
Gavin Dunkerton competed in the heptathlon for Messiah. After Day One of the competition, Puleo (2172) sits in fourth place out of seven competitors as Dunkerton (2168) is in fifth place.
4000m DMR
A team of
Josiah McCarthy,
Aedan Wilkinson,
Nathan Kimmel, and
Josiah Moyer recorded a time of 10:35.84 in the DMR, placing fourth out of 12 total teams. With the strong showing, the team of Falcons earned Messiah five team points, registering the seventh-fastest all-time DMR time in Messiah men's indoor track and field history. DeSales placed first in the heat with a time of 10:28.37.
Long Jump
Provan,
Landon Kerr, and
Noah Keitel represented the Falcons in the long jump. Provan led the way, notching an impressive second-place finish with a mark of 6.98m. Provan earned Messiah eight team points with his performance, falling just short of DeSales' Xavier Phoenix (7.09m). Kerr recorded a distance of 5.79m as Keitel registered a mark of 5.43m.

Messiah will be back in action at Day Two of the MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
