HILTON HEAD, SC - The Messiah men's tennis team beat St. John Fisher College early Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons won two of the three doubles matches and five singles matches to take the match 7-2 to improve to 2-0 on the week.
Doubles
The Falcons once again won courts 1 & 3 on their way to a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches. Court 2 of Baker/Martin lost 2-8 as they were the first court to end. Later it was Sell/
Michael Niemi who won a close eight-game pro set at No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-6. Court 1 with Wilson/Rose was a back-and-forth battle throughout and needed a set tiebreaker at 7-7 to decide the match. After saving numerous match points, Wilson/Rose won the tiebreak 8-7(8) to give the Falcons the 2-1 lead going into singles play.
Singles
Messiah would take five of the six singles matches once again, repeating their formula from yesterday's match against Penn St. Behrend.
Chase Wilson won 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 1 position while
Connor Rose needed a third set tiebreak to win his match at No. 2, 3-6, 6-2, (10-7).
Michael Sell and
Jonathan Baker won in straight sets at No. 3 & 4, 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-2 respectively.
Ellis Martin also won his match in the No. 6 position, 6-1, 6-4. In the only singles loss on the afternoon,
Josh Gingerich lost 0-6, 1-6 at No. 5.
