Smith's Two Goals Lead Falcons to Season Opening Win

GRANTHAM, PA - The No. 8 Nationally ranked Messiah Field Hockey team kicked off their season against Dickinson on Thursday night and opened up the slate with a 2-0 win. Ashlyn Smith tacked on the only two goals for the Falcons on the night in the victory.

The Falcons will host Johns Hopkins on September 3 at 1:00 PM on Anderson Field.

First Half
The Falcons jumped on the board first with a goal less than a minute into the action with an Ashlyn Smith goal (1) to make the score 1-0 early. The Falcons dominated possession, controlling the game and recording ten more shots than Dickinson (11-1).

The Falcons had plenty of opportunities to add to the lead but could not find the back of the cage throughout the rest of the first half. Dickinson threatened with their only shot on a turnover but Brubaker made a great stop in goal to keep the shutout intact through the first two quarters.

Second Half
Smith tacked on her second goal of the game (2) to take a 2-0 lead heading into the final quarter of action. The Falcons continued to have multiple chances, including nine penalty corners to Dickinson's zero but Smith's goals proved to be the only scores of the game.

Stats
Ashlyn Smith scored the first two goals of the campaign for Messiah on a night where Messiah shot the ball 22 times to the Red Devils three. Catie Brubaker earned her first win of the season in goal, making two saves.

Up Next
