GRANTHAM, Pa. – The No. 25 Messiah women's basketball team earned their 13th-straight victory with a 67-52 victory over the visiting Widener Pride on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons struggled from the field in the opening minutes, trailing 9-4 after three minutes of play. Messiah however rattled off a 24-6 run over the next nine minutes of play to take control of the game with a 28-15 lead early in the second quarter.
The Falcons led the rest of the way as they picked up their ninth-straight conference victory to begin the MAC Commonwealth slate.
Morgan Adams led the Falcons offense with 24 points on a 10-15 shooting performance while grabbing eight rebounds.
Amber High also had a strong game with 20 points and five rebounds.
With the victory, Messiah moves to 16-2 overall and 9-0 in the conference. They will be back in action when they travel to York College to take on the Spartans on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Pride jumped out to an early 5-0 lead just over a minute into the contest. The lead remained five for Widener following a jumper from Rachel Ludwig just over two minutes into the contest at 9-4. The Falcons would quickly respond. Starting with a jumper from
Morgan Adams, Messiah would score 11 of the next 13 points to take a 13-9 lead. During the run,
Amber High would score five points and
Megan Zimmerman would add four.
Messiah would extend that run for the remainder of the first quarter and into the second. In total it was a 26-8 burst for the Falcons that put Messiah ahead 28-15 following a
Reese Harden jumper early in the second. Widener would close out the half with an 8-2 run as Messiah and Widener combined for just 17 total points in the second quarter. The Falcons lead held at 30-23 after 20 minutes of play.
In the third quarter, Messiah outscored the Pride 20-13 to extend their lead to 14 points heading to the final quarter. Messiah's lead stood strong at 50-36 with 10 minutes remaining. The Falcons extended that lead to as many as 22 points midway through the fourth quarter at 64-42 after an
Amber High three pointer. While Widener ended the game on a 10-3 run, Messiah's victory was not in doubt down the stretch. The Falcons claimed the 67-52 victory.
What's Up Next
With the victory, Messiah moves to 16-2 overall and moves their win streak to 13 games. The Falcons will be back in action next Wednesday when they travel to York to take on the Spartans at 8:00 p.m.
