GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah University field hockey team had nine different goal scorers to lead them to a 11-1 win over Eastern University on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons totaled seven goals in the first half to jump out to early lead.
Carrie Bair scored two first-half goals to lead the way. The Falcons continued to pour it on in the second half, scoring four more goals, including the second goal of the day from
Teagan Murrie to cap off the 11-1 win.
Jaden Keister earned the start in goal for the Falcons and made one save.
Up next, the Falcons continue their MAC Commonwealth schedule with a matchup against the Stevenson University Mustangs on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m.
First Quarter
The Falcons needed just a couple minutes to get their offense going. After an Eastern turnover in their own side of the field,
Kelsey Heltzel got a pass from
Mallory Kline on the right side of the circle. Heltzel dribbled the ball down the end line and found an open
Aubrey Clark in front of the net, who sent a shot into the back of the goal to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead. The Falcons got back on the attack in the ninth minute.
Carrie Bair got the ball in front of the net, but was poked away by a Eastern defender. The ball found
Lindsay McFeaters stick and she ripped a shot that went past the Eastern goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The Falcons continued the pressure in the 13th minute with a penalty corner.
Teagan Murrie sent the corner into play and
Carrie Bair and
Nicole Shank each got shots off, but they were both saved by the Eastern goalkeeper. On the second rebound, the ball found Murrie and she ripped a shot into the back of the goal to extend the Falcons lead to 3-0. The Falcons though were not done in the 13th minute. After the restart, the Falcons quickly regained possession.
Megan North sent a shot towards the goal, but the shot was saved.
Carrie Bair gathered the rebound and made a move past the keeper and sent the ball into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.
Second Quarter
It would not take long for
Carrie Bair to get back on the board. In the 20th minute, after an Eastern turnover,
Kelsey Heltzel dribbled the ball again on the end line. This time she found Bair in front of the net and Bair sent her second goal of the game into the back of the goal to push the Falcons lead to five. The goal flurry continued in the 22nd minute.
Jenna Lutz sent a long pass from the 25-yard line and the ball made it all the way to the goal, where
Megan North tipped the ball into the back of the net to put the Falcons up 6-0. The Falcons finished the half off strong with an
Audrey Weger goal just as time expired to give Messiah a 7-0 lead at the break.
Third Quarter
The second half started with the Eagles on the attack. Sydney Davis got an open look just in front of the circle, but
Jaden Keister made a strong kick save to keep the shutout intact. After a slow start to the second half, the Falcons offense went back on the attack in the 39th minute.
Aubrey Clark dribbled the ball into the circle and sent a pass right in front of the goal to
Madi Johnson and Johnson tapped the ball into the goal to push the Falcons lead to 8-0. The Falcons continued the scoring in the 41st minute with a penalty corner. After the ball bounced around,
Olivia Zaskoda sent the ball into the back of the net for her first career goal.
Fourth Quarter
After nine unanswered goals, the Eagles got on the board after Kara Franz's shot was tipped by Emma Kircher and into the back of the goal. The Falcons though did not let up on the offensive end. After a misplay by a Falcon in the circle,
Jenna Lutz followed the ball and sent a shot into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 10-1 lead. The Falcons finished off the scoring with a penalty stroke goal from
Teagan Murrie for her second goal of the day to give the Falcons a 11-1 win in the MAC Commonwealth opener.
