No. 5 Field Hockey Set to Host NCAA Second, Third Round

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The fifth-ranked Messiah University field hockey team was selected to host the Second and Third Round of the NCAA Tournament after the Falcons claimed the MAC Commonwealth Championship last weekend. The Falcons welcome in the top-ranked Middlebury Panthers, No. 13 Cortland Red Dragons, and the William Smith Herons. The Falcons will face No. 13 Cortland on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2:00 p.m. on Anderson Field. Middlebury and William Smith will start the day with a matchup at 11:00 a.m.
 
The winners of Saturday's games will then meet on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the NCAA Third Round for a spot in the Final Four on the line.
 
Fans should note that since this is an NCAA Tournament event, tickets are required for all fans. The pricing for tickets are as follows: Adults: $5, Senior Citizens - $3, Students (valid ID) - $3, and Children (under 6) - $2. Thanks to a generous doner all Messiah students with a valid ID will be free of charge.

The Falcons are making their 36th NCAA Tournament appearance after a 17-1 season. The Falcons defeated No. 9 York, 1-0 in the MAC Commonwealth Championship game to earn an automatic bid. The Falcons dominated on Anderson Field with a 10-0 record during the 2023 season. The Falcons outscored teams 47-5 in the 10 games at home this season.
 
The Falcons offense was deep group in 2023 with nine players totaling 10 points or more on the season. The Falcons offense scored 72 goals on the season and average four goals per game. Even though the Falcons had a deep offense the defensive for the Falcons was even stronger. The Falcons allowed only 13 goals all season, which ranked 15th in the country. The defense is led by MAC Commonwealth Co-Defensive Player of the year Nicole Shank, with Allie Mast, Lillian Peters, Kelsey Helzel also being key defenders for the Falcons.

The Red Dragons are making their 31st NCAA Tournament appearance after a 18-1 season The Red Dragons won the SUNYAC Tournament for the second straight season, defeating New Paltz, 2-1. Cortland played in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons defeated the Ducks of Stevens 3-1 to advance to the Second Round. The Red Dragons fell behind early but scored three second-half goals to defeat the Ducks.
 
The Red Dragons this season had a dynamic offense that totaled 80 goals with 4.21 goals per game, which ranked 10th in the nation. Cortland had seven players with 10 points or more and three players with 30 points or more. The offense is led by Gianna Trunfio, who finished sevenths in the country with 20 goals on the season. The Cortland defense also was strong allowing on 13 goals all season. The Red Dragons had 10 shutouts on the season.

The Panthers are making their 20th tournament appearance after finishing the season 18-0. The Panthers have the biggest target on their backs with Middlebury winning the last five National Titles and six of the last seven championships. The Panthers won their sixth-straight NESCAC Championship with a 4-0 win over Williams. Middlebury became the first field hockey team to win 10 NESCAC Field Hockey Championships.
 
The Panthers had one of the top offenses in the nation with 92 goals scored and a 5.11 goals-per game, which ranked second in DIII. The Panthers had seven players with 10 or more points. The Panthers offense will be led by Amy Griffin and Katie George, who both finished with 20 goals on the season. The Panther's defense was just as impressive with only 10 goals allowed all season. The Panthers had 10 shutouts on the season even with 12 games against ranked teams this season.

The Herons made their 24th appearance in the NCAA Tournament with a 14-7 record. The Herons earned an automatic bid after defeating No. 24 Ithaca College 1-0 in the Liberty League Championship game. The Herons defeated Susquehanna 1-0 in the NCAA First Round to advance to the Second Round.
 
The Herons offensive finished the season with 44 goals scored on the season. The Herons had four players with 10 points or more on the season. William Smith will look for Rebecca Mantione to lead the Herons after she totaled 23 points on the season. The herons defense gave up 24 goals on the season. The Herons had nine shutouts on the season and head into the Second Round with four straight shutouts.
