Big Bats Lead Falcons Past Red Devils

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah baseball team hammered their way to a 10-6 victory over the Dickinson Red Devils on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon in Grantham. The Falcons knocked three home runs on the afternoon, including a pair of Sam Zercher, who drove home six runs on a 3-5 effort at the dish.

After Dylan Beard got the Falcons on the board with a solo homer, Zercher launched a two-run shot in the bottom of the first and followed up with a three-run homer in the seventh. In between those two blasts, Zercher drove home another run for a new career high in RBI in a game.

Joshua Ammons also went 3-5 at the plate, driving home a pair of runs and scoring three times, batting one spot ahead of Zercher. Ammons knocked a pair of doubles to help lead the Falcons' offense.

On the bump, Brody Martin got the win, pitching two innings of scoreless relief. After the Red Devils scored four times in the first two frames, Messiah's bullpen held Dickinson in check allowing just two unearned runs in the eighth.

Dickinson started the game quickly, scoring a run in the top of the first, but Messiah responded with a pair of first-inning homers from Dylan Beard and Sam Zercher, giving the Falcons a 3-1 lead. After the Red Devils took the lead back in the second with a three-run frame, Messiah leveled the score with an RBI single from Joshua Ammons in the bottom of the stanza.

In the fourth, Messiah took the lead back with a Joshua Ammons double that brought home Dustin Isanogle. Ammons would later score on an error and Messiah took a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Falcons added some insurance. Messiah took advantage of three Red Devil errors and pushed across four runs on just one hit. That knock however was a pretty big one as Sam Zercher ripped a three-run homer to centerfield, giving the Falcons a 10-4 lead.

While Dickinson would score a pair of unearned runs in the eighth, it was not enough as the Falcons would earn the 10-6 victory to improve to 7-9-1 on the season. Messiah is scheduled to be back in action on Thursday afternoon when they host the Widener Pride for a conference game at 3:30 p.m.
