Falcons Topple PSU Harrisburg for Third Win

GRANTHAM, PA. - The Messiah men's tennis team won all but two courts in a convincing 7-2 win against Penn State Harrisburg this afternoon. The Falcons competed well and their efforts were rewarded in a positive way, earning their first home win of the young season.

Wilson/Rose and Baker/Anderson won in doubles while Wilson, Rose, Gingerich, Niemi and Baker all found wins on the singles courts.

The Falcons will travel to Gettysburg on Friday, March 31 to battle the Bullets in a non-conference tilt. First serve is set for 4:00 PM.

On the Courts
Messiah jumped out to a 2-1 start after doubles picking up wins at No. 1 & 3. First, Baker/Anderson ran through their opponents 8-2 for the Falcons first point while Rose and Wilson on court one had to battle for every point in their matchup. Earning their way into a set tiebreak, Rose and Wilson continued fighting until they prevailed winning 7-5 in the tiebreak for the 8-7(5) win. Niemi/Gingerich fell on court two despite a late comeback but could not finish it off losing 6-8.

Singles
It was more of the same in singles for the Falcons, who won five of six courts for the eventual 7-2 match win. Chase Wilson and Connor Rose won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, and 6-3, 6-4 respectively on courts one and two. Josh Gingerich went the distance on court three after dropping the first set but was able to rally and complete the comeback 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 for the Falcons third win in singles.

Michael Niemi (No. 4) and Jonathan Baker (No. 6) also found success winning in straight sets with Niemi winning 7-6(2), 6-3 and Baker winning 6-2, 6-1. The only Falcon to drop their match was Michael Sell at No. 5. Sell was able to rebound after a first set loss and win the second but could not pull out the tiebreak as Sell lost 4-6, 6-2, 6-10.
