HILTON HEAD, SC. - The Messiah women's tennis team won 8-0 this afternoon over the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels to start off Spring Break strong. The Falcons won all but one match that was unable to be completed due to time restrictions.
The Falcons will be back on the courts tomorrow afternoon when they face Pfeiffer University at 4:30 PM on Hilton Head Island at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Club.
Shortened Format
Due to a time constricted three hour match window, the men played a shortened format for doubles as well as singles. In doubles, each eight-game pro-set started at 2-2 while in singles each set started at 2-all as well. For No. 5 & 6 singles, an eight game proset was contested.
Doubles
The No. 1 doubles team of Conjack/Heckman rallied from being down 5-6 in their proset and prevailed after winning three straight games to take the proset 8-6. On a similar note, on court two doubles, Sheaffer/Walker won four straight games to claim their proset 8-5. Tozzi/Lee won easily at No. 3 doubles 8-2 to head into singles with a 3-0 advantage.
Singles
In the most exciting match of the afternoon,
Kasi Conjack and her opponent battled it out in a well-fought match that would need a third set super tiebreak to decide the winner. Conjack took the first set 7-5 before dropping the second set 5-7 to set up the tiebreak, one that Conjack would command for its entirety. Conjack won the tiebreak 10-6.
At No. 2 & 3, first years
Isabella Heckman and
Kylie Walker won their first singles matches at the college level, winning 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-4 respectively.
Nicole Lee won on court four 6-3, 6-3 and
Angela Tozzi won her proset on court five 8-5. The only match that was unable to be completed was
Anna Lentz at the No. 6 singles position. Her proset was tied at 6-all before the match had to stop due to timing.
