Falcons Turn up the Heat, Tame Mustangs in Emphatic Conference Win

OWINGS MILLS, MD. - The Messiah women's tennis team earned a dominant 9-0 sweep of the Stevenson Mustangs earlier this afternoon. The Falcons were in command over the entirety of the match and didn't drop a set on the day as every Falcon put one in the win column for the good of the overall group.

Messiah will be on the road this weekend when they travel to Annville, Pa. to take on the Lebanon Valley Flying Dutchmen. That match will begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 15.

Doubles

It was a hot one down at Stevenson, as the game time temperature began at 82 degrees. There were no clouds in the vicinity of the Greenspring campus as the on court temperatures reached the upper nineties. It wouldn't bother the Falcons one bit on the day.

The Falcons were even with the Mustangs from the opening serve on all three courts but pulled away down the stretch and closed out all matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles. Tozzi/Lee as well as Sheaffer/Walker both won 8-5 at No. 3 and 2 respectively.

The No. 1 doubles squad of Conjack/Heckman rallied from behind to force a set tiebreak that they would control from start to finish, winning 7-1 for the 8-7(1) win.

Singles

Messiah carried their momentum from doubles into singles, corralling the Mustangs on every court without surrendering a single set. Rebekah Sheaffer was the first to finish at No. 4, cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 victory. No. 3 Isabella Heckman was not far behind, finishing with an identical score of 6-3, 6-1.

Angela Tozzi picked up the sixth win for the Falcons, winning 6-3, 6-3 at the number six position. Then it was Kasi Conjack prevailing in a back and forth affair, winning by a score line of 6-4, 6-3 on court one.

Kylie Walker continued her winning ways at No. 2, winning 6-4, 6-3 for the Falcons eighth win. Their ninth win came courtesy of Nicole Lee who rallied from a 4-5 deficit in the first set and won three straight games for the 7-5 win. Lee wouldn't drop another game winning the second set 6-0 for the 7-5, 6-0 win. Lee ended the match winning nine straight games on court five.

It was a commanding and overall well fought 9-0 win.

Up Next

The win takes the Falcons record to 5-6 on the year and 2-1 in the conference.
