Lighting Delay Doesn't Slow Falcons Against Widener

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The No. 11 Messiah women's lacrosse team earned a 14-6 victory over the Widener Pride on Saturday afternoon. After trailing 3-1 midway through the opening quarter, the Falcons battled back and took a 7-5 lead before lighting stopped the match for three hours and 10 minutes less than a minute before halftime. The 6-2 Messiah run featured six different goal scorers for the Falcons.

After the lengthy delay, the Falcons showed no signs of slowing up with Hope Flack scoring as the buzzer sounded for halftime to give Messiah an 8-5 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the Pride and Falcons both scored one goal each with Mackenzie Schnur connecting for Messiah. The Falcons ran away from the Pride in the fourth, holding Widener without a goal while scoring five of their own.

In total, the Falcons held Widener to just three goals in the final 52 minutes of the match as they claimed their 12th victory of the season. Messiah moves to 5-1 in the conference this year and needs just one more win in their final two games to lock up the two seed in the conference.

How It Happened
The Pride were the team quickly out in front in the first quarter. Widener scored the first goal of the game by Jamie DeHaven before Emma Lytle leveled the game less than 30 seconds later. The Pride scored back-to-back goals with individual efforts from Clark Trowbridge to take a 3-1 lead.

Messiah then tied things up with goals from Natalie Macri and Grace Gormley in the final three minutes of the period to level the match at 3-3 after 15 minutes of play.

Widener opened the scoring in the second, but The Falcons scored the next four goals to take their first lead of the game at 7-4. Messiah's scoring run featured goals from Makenzie Schnur, Jordan Lewicki, Hayley Lettinga and Emma Lytle. Two of Rachel Delate's six assits on the day came to Shnur and Lettina during the run.

Widener's Catherine Scott scored just seconds before the game was halted for three hours and 10 minutes due to storms and lighting. The Falcons led 7-5 during the delay and at 5:00 p.m. when the game picked back up, Messiah tallied as the halftime horn sounded with a goal from Hope Flack.

A low-scoring third quarter had only two goals with the Falcons and Pride each netting one apiece. Delate found Schnur for Messiah's only goal of the period with 7:45 left in the quarter.

In the fourth, Messiah scored five-straight goals with two goals from Flack and Schnur and one from Lettinga to earn the 14-6 victory.

What's Up Next
With the victory, Messiah moves to 12-2 on the season and 5-1 in the conference this season. The Falcons have just two games left in the regular season, taking on Hood this Wednesday and Albright on Saturday. Should the Falcons win one of their final two games, they will lock up the two seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
