GRANTHAM, PA. – The Messiah Men's basketball team loses another conference match up against the York College Spartans. York defeated the Falcons 72-58 on the road.
Caleb Thompson led the Falcons with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Caleb Lyles added 11 points, and
Evan Parker,
Johnny McBride, and
Dylan Cuperus all finished with six points in the loss.
Messiah will be on the road against Widener January 17
th.
First Half Action
The Spartans got off to an early start grabbing a 9-5 lead through the first four minutes of the half. The Falcons capitalized off a couple
Johnny McBride baskets, and a Caleb Thomson layup to make the score 12-9. Over the next six minutes the Falcons would go cold as they watched the Spartans go on a 11-2 run, opening a 23-11 lead with 10:15 on the clock.
Caleb Lyles would break the scoreless run knocking down a jumper to make it a 10-point game with eight minutes remaining in the half. Messiah would begin to chip away at the score making it a five-point deficit following an
Evan Parker three 23-18. The Spartans would hold the Falcons to 23 total points at the half, heading into the second half up 31-23.
Tough Second Half
The Falcons opened the half with an and-one basket from
Caleb Lyles to make it a 31-26 deficit within the first 10 seconds of the half. Messiah would continue to keep the score within 10 points despite the Spartans getting some rhythm offensively, the Falcons would respond with a basket of their own. Following a Parker three pointer the score was back to a five-point deficit 36-31. Over the next four minutes
Dylan Cuperus, and Thompson would bring the score to 40-37 their closest lead of the game. However, York turned it up offensively opening a 14-point lead over the Falcons with 10 minutes left in the game. From that point on the Falcons couldn't recover despite getting points from six different scorers, Messiah could not stop what the Spartans had to offer offensively. York captured their first conference win of the season while dropping the Falcons to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
