No. 14 Field Hockey Blanks Hood, Secures Top-Seed in MAC Commonwealth Tournament

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The No. 16 Messiah Field Hockey team hosted Hood College on Wednesday evening for their final regular season home game. The Falcons scored four goals in the first half and five in the second, en route to a 9-0 conference victory on Anderson Field. Carrie Bair had the lone goal of the first quarter before Chelsea Carpenter, Aubrey Clark, and Bair each scored one in the second. In the third quarter, Leah Bryner scored a pair for the Falcons to bring the lead to 6-0 heading into the final quarter of play. Jenna Lutz, Olivia Zaskoda, and Carpenter each tallied a goal in the final quarter to give the Falcons a 9-0 conference victory.

The Falcons are next in action on Saturday, November 2, when they travel to Reading, Pa. to take on the Albright Lions in the final regular season game. Action is set to begin at 5:00 p.m.

First Quarter
The Falcons pushed forward in the first minute of play towards the goal looking to take an early lead. Anna Koenig took the first shot of the game at the two-minute mark, forcing the Blazers goalie to make the early save. Just three minutes into play, Messiah picked up their first penalty corner of the game. Teagan Murrie was able to fire off a shot, but the Hood goalie made another great save to keep the Falcons from scoring. The Blazers worked their way up the field looking for an opportunity of their own, but the Falcons were able to regain possession and make the push up the field again. Just under five minutes in, Hailey Womer intercepted a ball in the Falcons defensive third and carried the ball the length of the field. She looked to find Leah Bryner in front of the cage but was unable to connect. Play was back-and-forth for a few minutes before Leah Bryner took a shot at the 12:21 mark, again forcing a save by the Hood goalie. Messiah picked up a penalty corner on the following play, but a Hood defender made the defensive save on Murrie's shot. With 45 seconds remaining, the Falcons picked up their third corner of the quarter. Mallory Kline was able to find Carrie Bair in front of the cage for the tip in shot to give Messiah the 1-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Second Quarter
Messiah looked to continue their momentum with a shot by Chelsea Carpenter just 15 seconds into the second quarter. Hood picked up the save in goal, but Audrey Weger was able to feed the deflection back to Carpenter who slotted it past the goalie for Messiah's second goal of the game. Messiah picked up their second corner of the quarter at the 20:38 mark. Ellie Lefever sent a pass to Aubrey Clark at the top of the circle, and she fired a shot past the defenders and goalie to give Messiah the 3-0 lead. The Blazers pushed to their offensive end but were able to get a shot off. Messiah continued their attack and Carrie Bair was able to fire a shot past the goalie to score her second of the night and increase the Falcons' lead to 4-0. With just over three minutes remaining in the first half, Mallory Kline carried the ball into the circle and drew a foul to force a penalty corner. Kline fired off a shot, but a defender made the stop to keep Messiah from scoring. Hood picked up their first shot of the game at the 28:21 mark, but Messiah blocked the shot and took back possession.

Third Quarter
At the half, Hood put in a new goalie and the Falcons were quick to continue the offensive pressure they applied in the first half. Just over a minute into the second half, Mallory Kline fired a shot but was blocked by a Hood defender. Messiah maintained possession and Anna Koenig was able to find Leah Bryner in front of the goal where she was able to slot a ball in for a goal, increasing the Messiah lead to 5-0. At the 35:29 mark, Carrie Bair fired a shot that was saved by a Hood defender. The deflection found its way to Leah Bryner who fired a shot back on goal that found its way past the goalie to bring the lead to 7-0. Messiah fired off two more shots in the final five minutes of the quarter but were unable to find the back of the goal.

Fourth Quarter
Just under two minutes into the final quarter of play, the Falcons earned a penalty stroke. Jenna Lutz stepped up to the penalty spot and was able to convert for the Falcons' seventh goal of the evening. The Blazers picked up their first penalty corner of the game at the 50:24 mark. Hood was able to fire off a shot but missed wide and the momentum quickly shifted back in favor of Messiah. The Falcons carried the momentum to the other end of the field, where Jenna Lutz was able to send a ball to Olivia Zaskoda who slotted the ball past the goalie to increase the Messiah lead to 8-0. Messiah added one more goal on the night when Audrey Weger found Chelsea Carpenter to bring the lead to 9-0 with two minutes remaining. Carpenter fired one more shot for the Falcons, but the shot was blocked. The Falcons ended the game with the 9-0 victory over the Blazers.

Stats
Leah Bryner, Chelsea Carpenter, and Carrie Bair lead the Falcons with two goals apiece. Aubrey Clark, Jenna Lutz, and Olivia Zaskoda each added one goal. Audrey Weger had two assists on the night. Jenna Lutz, Anna Koenig, Mallory Kline, and Ellie Lefever added one assist each. Messiah put 17 of their 24 shots on goal. Hood took two shots. Messiah earned 10 penalty corners while the Blazers picked up one. Joy Lippert earned the win in goal for the Falcons.
