CHESTER, Pa. – On Wednesday evening, the fifth-ranked Messiah University women's soccer team blanked the Pride of Widener University, 2-0 to clinch the top-seed in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament. The Falcons sent six shots on goal in the first 29 minutes but could not find the back of the net. In the 43rd minute though,
Mia Libby broke the tie with a goal from
Thea Neimond to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead at the half. The Falcons added insurance in the 62nd minute with a
Brittany Laird goal. The Falcons held the Pride without a shot for the entire 90 minutes to win 2-0.
Up next, the Falcons return to Shoemaker Field to take on the Lions of Albright College on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
First Half
From the opening kickoff, the Falcons controlled the pace of play. The Falcons got two shots on goal from
Addi Martin and one from
Julia Martin in the first 24 minutes, but each shot was saved by the Widener goalkeeper. The Falcons though kept on the attack and looked to break the scoreless tie in the 43rd minute. After the Pride tried cleaning the ball,
Thea Neimond gathered the ball on the left side of the field about 25 yards away from the goal. Neimind sent a cross into the middle of the box and
Mia Libby jumped up and headed the ball into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 1-0 headed into the half.
Second Half
The Falcons continued to put the pressure on the Pride defense to start the second half.
Addi Martin and
Kristina Akselsen each sent shots on goal, but each shot was saved by the Pride's goalkeeper. The Falcons continued the attack in the 62nd minute.
Addi Martin sent a cross from left side of the box to the middle of the box. A Widener defender tried playing the ball, but
Brittany Laird stole the ball, barreled through the Pride defender, and sent the ball into the bottom-right corner to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. The Falcons could not add to their lead, but the defense shut down the Pride offense allowing zero shots the entire 90 minutes to give the Falcons a 2-0 win.
