GRANTHAM, Pa. – A huge second half led the Messiah men's lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over the Widener Pride on Wednesday evening for the Falcons first win over the Pride since April 11, 2018. Widener took a 6-4 lead early in the second half, but Messiah closed the game on a 12-1 run to clinch the win. With the victory, the Falcons improve to 4-0 in the conference and clinch a spot in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
Bobby Berg led the offensive effort, scoring eight goals on the night including six tallies in the second half.
Chad Teresky facilitated the Falcons' attack, dishing out four assists and scoring a pair of goals on his own for six total points.
Between the pipes,
Jourdain Algarin saved 13 Widener shots while allowing just seven goals.
Messiah is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Stevenson to take on the Mustangs at 7:00 p.m.
First Quarter
The Falcons opened the game with the first goal with
Bobby Berg scoring from
Will Ehrhart to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead with 11:20 remaining in the first quarter. Widener tied the game less than a minute later, but the Falcons retook the lead on a
Chris Esslinger goal from
James Myers with a little over nine minutes remaining in the quarter. After some tough defense from both sides, Widener tied the game with 1:24 remaining in the quarter, but
Bobby Berg gave the Falcons the 3-2 lead with a goal with less than a minute remaining.
Second Quarter
The second quarter started with great defense from both sides, but the Falcons increased their lead to 4-2 with a goal from
RJ Mellor with 8:01 remaining in the half. The Pride though finished the half with three unanswered goals to give them a 5-4 lead headed into the break.
Third Quarter
The Pride opened the second half with a goal in the first minute to push their lead to 6-4. The Falcons though responded with four straight goals led by two goals from
Bobby Berg to give the Falcons an 8-6 lead with 6:49 remaining in the third. After a Pride goal 30 seconds later, the Falcons finished the third quarter with three straight goals, highlighted by a rare long-pole goal from
Tristan Lynch to give the Falcons a 11-7 lead headed into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Chad Teresky opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal in the first minute from
Seth Libby to push the Falcons lead to five. The Falcons then scored the final four goals with
Bobby Berg scoring three and
Seth Libby adding a goal to give the Falcons a 16-7 lead. The Falcons defense and Jourdain Algrain shut down the Pride attack in the fourth quarter by not allowing a single goal.
Stats
Bobby Berg led the Falcons offense with eight goals, two caused turnovers, and tow ground balls.
Chad Teresky totaled two goals and four assists, along with three ground balls.
Seth Libby added three points on two goals and an assist. Libby also caused two turnovers and scooped up two ground balls.
Tristan Lynch and Grant Peffal led the Falcons defense with three caused turnovers each. The Falcons defense in total caused 18 Pride turnovers.
Ben Antel and
Bradley Simons each won four faceoffs.
Jourdain Algarin was a brick wall in the cage for the Falcons totaling 14 saves.
Josh Grove also earned time in the cage for the Falcons.
