SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The No. 3 Messiah women's soccer team earned their third straight draw to open the season, with a 1-1 game at Swarthmore College on Saturday evening. The Garnet scored a goal in the 23rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Falcons out shot the Garnet 13-5 heading into the break, but could not one put one into the back of the net. The Falcons continued to rattle off shots in the second half, but finally broke through in the 88
th minute, with a
Tahlia Lloyd goal from
Kristina Akselsen to tie the game at one.
Brittany Laird got an opportunity to score the game-winner just a minute later, but the shot was saved by the Garnet goalkeeper.
Up next, the Falcons head back to Shoemaker Field to take on the twenty-fifth ranked Green Terror of McDaniel College on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 4:00 p.m.
First Half
The Falcons got off to a strong start with a shot from
Tahlia Lloyd towards the top-right corner of the goal, but the Garnet goalkeeper made an early save. After a couple of Garnet opportunities were shut down by
Ava Wert, but the Garnet got a shot in the back of the net in the 23
rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Falcons got two big chances in the remainder of the first half with
Kaitlyn Laird hitting the post in the 32nd minute and then getting two of her shots saved in the final five minutes of the half.
Second Half
The Falcons added a few shots that went wide, but started to put some shots on goal after the 70th minute.
Kaitlyn Laird,
Brittany Laird, and
Addi Martin each sent shots towards the goal, but the Garnet goalkeeper continued to make the saves to keep the Garnet lead. As the time continued the wind, the Falcons were still searching for that equalizing goal. In the 88th minute the Falcons offense finally found the back of the goal with a
Tahlia Lloyd goal from
Kristina Akselsen to tie the game. Just a minute later,
Brittany Laird looked to have the winning goal on a shot into the bottom-right corner, but the Garnet goalkeeper made one final save to keep the score tied at one.
