Women's Volleyball Drops Five-Setter To Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Messiah Women's Volleyball wrapped up regular season play on the road this afternoon, falling to the Hornets of Shenandoah University in five sets (25-16, 22-25, 27-25, 25-18, 14-16).
 
In set one, the Hornets took the lead early, but Messiah used a couple of runs to come back and win the set. In set two, Shenandoah held the lead, before Messiah tied the set halfway through. However, Shenandoah pulled away late to take the set. The third set was back and forth, with Shenandoah taking the set in extra points to take a two set to one lead. Messiah came out strong the start the fourth set, cruising to a set win to force a deciding fifth. The teams battled the entire fifth set, but Shenandoah pulled away late to take the set and the match. Sydney Wolfe led the Falcons with 20 kills. Makenzie Adams had a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Claire Marzolino had a team-high 21 digs.

Set One
Sydney Wolfe and Leah Youtzy combined for a block to give Messiah a 2-1 lead, but Shenandoah responded with a five-point run to take a 6-2 lead. The Hornets lead stayed at four as the teams traded points to a 10-6 score, with Sydney Wolfe, Katie Quesenberry, and Makenzie Adams tallying kills for the Falcons during the stretch. Shenandoah won the next point to extend the lead to five, but Messiah used kills from Julia Bowen, Leah Youtzy, and Cassidy Dell to go on a five-point run, tying the set 11-11. Messiah used the run to build some momentum, with two more kills each from Julia Bowen and Sydney Wolfe giving Messiah a 19-13 lead. Wolfe, Makenzie Adams, and Katie Quesenberry all added kills as the Falcons cruised the rest of the way to a set win.
 
Set Two
A five-point run from the Hornets to start the set forced an early timeout from Messiah. After the timeout, Messiah began to find their footing, with Makenzie Adams, Leah Youtzy, Sydney Wolfe, and Katie Quesenberry all adding kills for the Falcons, now trailing 8-6. Wolfe, Quesenberry, and Julia Bowen all added kills for Messiah, but Shenandoah extended the lead back to five, at 16-11. However, Messiah would get right back in the set by winning six of the next seven points, tying the set 17-17. Makenzie Adams, Julia Bowen, and Leah Youtzy all added kills for Messiah as the teams traded points, with the set still tied, at 21-21. Bowen would add a final Falcon kill, but Shenandoah would win four of the last five points to take the set.
 
Set Three
Sydney Wolfe added two kills as the teams battled to a 5-5 tie. Shenandoah began to build a small lead, up 9-6, but Leah Youtzy scored a kill and Cassidy dropped in two straight service aces to quickly tie the set, 9-9. Hannah Thomas dropped in a service ace of her own, with Messiah taking the lead, 11-10. Shenandoah won the next three points to take the lead back, but Leah Youtzy picked up a kill and a service ace to tie the set, 13-13. Makenzie Adams also added a service ace, plus two kills, as Messiah began to build a lead, up 19-15 in the set. Julia Bowen tacked on a kill, but Shenandoah fought back to take the lead, 24-23. Makenzie Adams tallied back-to-back kills to make it 25-24 Messiah, but Shenandoah won the final three points, taking the set 27-25.
 
Set Four
Two kills from Sydney Wolfe and a string of Hornets errors gave Messiah a 6-3 lead. Katie Quesenberry tallied two kills to make it 8-3, but Shenandoah went on a five-point run tie the set, 8-8. Katie Quesenberry stopped the run with a kill, and added a solo block to make it 10-8, Messiah. Shenandoah won the next three points to take their first lead of the set, but a kill from Cassidy Dell tied it, 11-11. The teams then traded points to a 15-15 tie. Messiah then went on a five-point run, fueled by kills from Makenzie Adams and Sydney Wolfe, and a service ace from Leah Youtzy to make it 20-15. Next, Makenzie Adams and Katie Quesenberry combined for two straight blocks, and each added one more kill as the Falcons closed out the set, forcing a fifth set.
 
Set Five
Kills from Sydney Wolfe and Makenzie Adams gave Messiah a quick 3-0, but Shenandoah responded with a four-point run to take the lead. Next, Sydney Wolfe added two more kills for Messiah, with the set tied 6-6. Cassidy Dell and Katie Quesenberry then tacked on kills, giving Messiah a 9-8 lead. Katie Quesenberry added followed her kill with a solo block, and Julia Bowen tacked on a kill as the teams battled to an 11-11 tie. Leah Youtzy and Sydney Wolfe each added kills to make it 14-12, giving Messiah match point. However, Shenandoah would take the next three points to win the set, and the match.
 
Stats
Sydney Wolfe led the Falcons with 20 kills. Makenzie Adams had a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Claire Marzolino had a team-high 21 digs. Katie Quesenberry had 11 kills and five blocks. Julia Bowen added 10 kills. Cassidy Dell had 52 assists and 17 digs. Hannah Thomas had 17 digs, while Courtney Wolf added 16 digs.
