Baseball Splits Doubleheader at No. 16 Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – On Sunday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team split a doubleheader with the sixteenth-ranked Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College. In game one, the Falcons earned a 1-0 win over with a strong seven inning shutout from Christian Foltz. The Falcons scored the lone run of the game in the top of fourth on an error, but the one run was enough as Christian Foltz threw a two-hit, eight strikeout shutout to give the Falcons the win.
 
In game two, the Yellow Jackets earned the 9-4 win as the Falcons comeback attempt fell short. The Yellow Jackets opened the game strong scoring two runs in the first and the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets then added four runs in bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 8-0.  The Falcons looked to make a comeback with three runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh, but the Yellow Jackets added the final run in the bottom of eighth to earn the 9-4 win. Dylan Beard led the Falcons with a hit and two RBIs. Jarrett Gordon, Evan Wagaman, Cristian Reyna, and David Martinez each added a hit.
 
Up next, the Falcons travel to Baltimore, Md. to take on No. 6 Johns Hopkins on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 2:30 p.m.
 
Messiah 1, No. 16 Randolph-Macon 0
After a scoreless first, the Falcons looked to get on the board in the second. Brayden Burkholder got a two out single for the first hit of the game, but the Falcons could not bring him in, and the game remained scoreless.
 
In the top of the third, Isaiah Parido hit another two-out single for the Falcons, but again the Yellow Jackets got out of the inning. Christian Foltz worked around some trouble in the bottom of the third, as the Yellow Jackets put runners on first and third with two outs, but Foltz got a ground out to end the threat.
 
The Falcons looked to break the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Dylan Beard hit a one-out single to get the Falcons a base runner. After a Dustin Isanogle ground out advanced Beard to second, Brayden Burkholder reached on an error and Beard came around to score to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
 
After a scoreless bottom of the fourth, the Falcons looked to add to their lead. Luke Ott doubled down the left field line and then stole third. The Yellow Jackets though got out of the inning to keep the game at 1-0.
 
The Falcons added one more hit from Brayden Burkholder, but Christian Foltz already got all the run support he needed. Foltz dominated in the final innings allowing only one hit and five strikeouts to give the Falcons the 1-0 win.

Brayden Burkholder led the Falcons two hits. Dylan Beard added a hit and scored the lone run of the game. Luke Ott and Isaiah Parido each tallied a hit. Christian Foltz threw a complete game shutout, allowing only two hits, two walks, and tallying eight strikeouts.
 
No. 16 Randolph-Macon 9, Messiah 4
In the bottom of the first, the Yellow Jackets started the scoring with two runs on a hit, walk, and a hit by pitch to take an early 2-0 lead.
 
After a couple of scoreless innings, in which Evan Wagaman tallied the lone hit for the Falcons, the Yellow Jackets looked to add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Yellow Jackets added two more runs to increase their lead to 4-0 headed into the fifth.
 
The Yellow Jackets added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to push their lead to 8-0.
 
The Falcons looked to battle back in the top of the sixth. David Martinez led off the inning with a single and the Nick Moyer walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. After Isaiah Parido was hit by a pitch, and a strikeout, Dylan Beard hit a two-RBI single to reduce the Yellow Jackets lead to 8-2. After an Evan Wagaman walk, Brayden Burkholder hit an RBI ground out to reduce the Yellow Jackets lead to 8-3 entering the bottom of the sixth.
 
After a scoreless bottom of the sixth, the Falcons looked to keep the momentum going on the offensive end in the top of the seventh. Jarrett Gordon led off the inning with a double to left field. After a fly out advanced Gordon to third, Nick Moyer hit a sacrifice fly to reduce the Yellow Jackets lead to 8-4.
 
The Yellow Jackets added a run in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 9-4 and the Falcons could not get a late rally going and the Falcons and Yellow Jackets split the doubleheader.

Dylan Beard led the Falcons with a hit and two RBIs. Jarrett Gordon, Evan Wagaman, Cristian Reyna, and David Martinez each added a hit. Nick Moyer added a run scored and an RBI. Drew Dellinger pitched 2.1 innings out of the pen, allowing only one hit.
