Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Tight Battle at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – On Wednesday evening, the Messiah University men's lacrosse team dropped a MAC Commonwealth matchup to the Pride of Widener University, 13-9. The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle, but the Pride outscored the Falcons 4-3 to take the early lead. The Pride then outscored the Falcons by two in the second to take an 8-5 lead at the half. The Falcons outscored the Pride by one in the third to reduce the Pride lead to 9-7 headed into the final quarter. The Pride however, outscored the Falcons by two in the fourth to earn the 13-9 win. Bobby Berg led the Falcons with four goals and an assist. Owen Hammel and Ben Ferrell each tallied two goals.

First Quarter
The Pride opened the game strong with a goal in the first minute to take an early 1-0 lead. The Falcons answered back less than a minute later with a Bobby Berg goal to tie the game at one. The back-and-forth action continued with a Widener goal and then another goal from Bobby Berg to keep the score tied with 9:16 remaining in the first. The pride retook the lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the first, but the Falcons tied the game with 1:52 remaining in the first with a goal from Owen Hammel. The Pride however, scored a goal just 2 seconds later to take a 4-3 lead after the first quarter.
 
Second Quarter
After almost five minutes of scoreless play, Owen Hammel scored his second goal of the first half to tie the game at four. The Pride then went on a 4-0 run to take a 8-4 lead with 3:16 remaining in the half. The Falcons cut the Pride led to three with a goal from Bobby Berg to put the score at 8-5 at the half.
 
Third Quarter
After just over six minutes of scoreless play, the Falcons scored a goal from Ben Ferrell to reduce the Pride lead to two. Just two minutes later, the Pride scored a goal to push their lead back to three. The Falcons though beat the buzzer with a goal from Bobby Berg with five seconds remaining in the third to reduce the Pride's lead to 9-7 headed into the fourth quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
The Pride opened the fourth quarter with three-straight goals to push their lead to 12-7 with 11:25 remaining in the game. The Falcons looked to start a comeback with a goal from Ben Ferrell from Bobby Berg to reduce the Pride's lead to four with 9:28 remaining in the game. Both defenses though prevented any scoring for the next seven minutes before the Pride scored a goal to push their lead back to five. The Falcons added a goal from Dean Gillette with 12 seconds remaining in the game, but the Pride earned the 13-9 win.
 
Stats
Bobby Berg led the Falcons with four goals and an assist. Owen Hammel and Ben Ferrell each tallied two goals. Dean Gillette also scored a goal. Walker Penchansky led the Falcons defense with two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Ben Antel led the Falcons with four faceoff wins. Jourdain Algarin started in the cage for the Falcons and made 13 saves.
