Wagaman’s Go-Ahead Homer Powers Falcons to Regional Finals

ASHLAND, Va. – On Saturday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team used a two-run go-ahead home run to defeat the Monarchs of Methodist University, 6-3, to advance to the Regional Finals. After three scoreless innings, the Monarchs scored two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. The Falcons responded quickly with a solo opposite field home run from Drew Hurst to reduce the Methodist lead to 2-1 through four innings. The Falcons tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error, but the Monarchs scored a run in the top of the eighth to regain a one-run lead. Evan Wagaman ripped a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Falcons a 4-3. Dustin Isanogle and Isaiah Parido each added RBI singles shortly after the home run to give the Falcons the 6-3 lead headed into the top of the ninth. Noah Barrall pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to give the Falcons the 6-3 win and a trip to the Regional Finals tomorrow. Isaiah Parido led the Falcons with three hits and an RBI. Evan Wagaman tallied two hits and two RBIs, including the clutch two-run home run to give the Falcons the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Drew Hurst also hit a solo home run in the fourth. Dustin Isanogle added an RBI single. Christian Foltz threw seven innings for the Falcons, allowing two earned runs on six hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts.
 
Up next, the Falcons take on the winner of Randolph-Macon College and Methodist University in the Regional Finals at 11:00 a.m. If the Falcons fall in game one, the two teams will play another game to decide who makes it to the NCAA Super Regionals.

Messiah 6, Methodist 3
After three scoreless innings, the Monarchs broke the scoreless tie with two RBI singles to give Methodist a 2-0 lead headed to the bottom of the fourth.
 
The Falcons look to answer in the bottom of the fourth though. Drew Hurst led off the inning with a solo opposite field home run to reduce the Monarchs lead to 2-1 through four innings of play.
 
After two and a half scoreless innings, the Falcons looked to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Luke Ott led off the inning with a walk and then Nick Moyer advanced Ott to second on a sacrifice bunt. After David Martinez reached on a hit by pitch, Ott stole third and on the throw from the Monarchs' catcher, the ball went into left field and Ott scored tying the game at two.
 
The Monarchs though answered back in the top of the eighth with a run on an RBI single to give the Monarchs a 3-2 lead.
 
The Falcons looked to once again answer the Monarchs in the bottom of the eighth. Drew Hurst led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a balk. Evan Wagaman then ripped a two-run home run to right center to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead. The Falcons continued to look to add insurance run, as Carter Reid drew a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Luke Ott. After a strikeout, David Martinez reached on a hit by pitch to give the Falcons runners on first and second with two outs. Dustin Isanogle then drilled an RBI single up the middle to give the Falcons a two-run lead. Isaiah Parido then followed up Isanogle's single with an RBI single of his own to give the Falcons a 6-3 lead headed into the top of the ninth.
 
Noah Barrall worked around a two-out single and struck out the final batter of the game to give the Falcons the 6-3 win.
