Falcons Top Eagles in Back-And-Forth Battle

ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – On Wednesday evening, the Messiah University women's basketball team used a strong third quarter to defeat the Eagles of Eastern University, 59-50. Both teams scored 11 points in the first quarter to keep the game tied headed into the second. The Eagles outscored the Falcons by three in a defensive second quarter to put the score at 21-18 at the half. The Falcons offense exploded in the third, outscoring the Eagles by 13, to take a 46-36 lead headed into the final quarter. The Eagles stormed back in the fourth to tie the game at 46, but the Falcons ended the game with a 13-4 run to earn the 59-50 win. Liv Monturo led the Falcons with 19 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block. EmmyFaith Wood totaled 12 points and three assists. April Kauffeldt added 10 points and six rebounds.
 
Up next, the Falcons travel to Owings Mills, Md. to take on the Mustangs of Stevenson University on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m.

First Quarter
Both teams opened the game trading baskets in the first three minutes to keep the game tied. Liv Monturo and EmmyFaith Wood each scored a basket for the Falcons during the stretch. The two teams continued to go back-and-forth in the rest of the first with each team scoring seven points to put the score at 11-11. Charlotte Milanesi led the Falcons throughout the rest of the first with four points.
 
Second Quarter
The Falcons opened the second with a 7-2 run to take a 18-13 lead with five minutes remaining in the half. Liv Monturo started the run with a basket and EmmyFaith Wood capped off the run with a jumper. The Eagles then went on an 8-0 run to take a 21-18 lead at the half.
 
Third Quarter
The Falcons opened the third strong with two straight threes from Hope Cook and EmmyFaith Wood in the first minute to give the Falcons a 24-21 lead. The Eagles answered quickly with an 8-0 run to take a five-point lead with 7:40 remaining in the third. The Falcons responded back with an 8-2 run to take a one-point lead with just under six minutes remaining in the third. Cook led the Falcons with six points during the run. After some more back-and-forth play, the Falcons ended the third with an 11-1 run to take a 46-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
The Eagles opened the fourth with a 10-0 run to tie the game at 46 with just under six minutes to go in the game. The Falcons ended the run with three-straight points from Liv Monturo, but the Eagles quickly answered with a basket to cut the Falcons lead to one. The Falcons broke the back-and-forth battle that took place all game with a 10-2 run to close the game and earn the 59-50 win, April Kauffeldt and Monturo led the Falcons during the final run with four points each.

Liv Monturo led the Falcons with 19 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block. EmmyFaith Wood totaled 12 points and three assists. April Kauffeldt added 10 points and six rebounds. Hope Cook and Charlotte Milanesi each scored nine points. The Falcons shot 39.7 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc. The Eagles shot 34.4 percent from the field and 13.6 percent from three.
