No. 15 Baseball Falls Twice in Tight Doubleheader at No. 22 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – On Saturday afternoon, the fifteenth-ranked Messiah University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the twenty-second ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University.
In game one, the Captains started the game strong with two runs in the bottom of the second to take the early lead. The Falcons responded with three in the third to take a 3-2 lead. The Falcons then added two in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-2. The Captains scored four straight runs to earn the 6-5 win. Drew Hurst led the Falcons with five hits and three RBIs. Nick Moyer and Carter Reid each totaled two hits. Isaiah Parido totaled a hit and two runs scored. Zachary Harris earned the started and pitched five innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts.
In game two, The Captains scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. The Falcons offense had been limited all game, but scored three runs in the ninth, before their comeback fell short and CNU earned the 5-3 win. David Martinez led the Falcons with two hits and an RBI. Nick Moyer and Isaiah Parido each tallied a hit and an RBI. Christian Foltz pitched five innings on the mound, allowing three hits, three unearned runs, three walks, and seven strikeouts. Owen Thornton pitched two scoreless innings out of the pen and struck out four batters.
 
Up next, the Falcons host the Red Devils of Dickinson College on Tuesday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m. for their 2026 home opener.

Game One: No. 22 CNU 6, No. 15 Messiah 5
In the top of the first, the Falcons loaded the bases with Drew Hurst, Isaiah Parido, and Carter Reid all reaching base, but the Captains got out of the inning with a double play.
 
After a scoreless bottom of the first and top of the second, the Captains scored two runs in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Falcons then looked to respond in the top of the third. Cristian Reyna led off the inning reaching first on a hit by pitch and Isaiah Parido singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. David Martinez then hit an RBI single to put the Falcons within one. Drew Hurst quickly followed the single with a two-RBI single of his own to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead.
 
After a scoreless fourth, the Falcons looked to add to their lead in the top of the fifth. After a strikeout, Isaiah Parido reached first on a walk. After a Parido stolen base and a walk, Drew Hurst hit an RBI double to right to push the Falcons lead to two. Carter Reid then traded places with Hurst with an RBI double of his own to extend the Falcons lead to 5-2 headed to the bottom of the fifth.
 
After a scoreless bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, the Captains cut the Falcons lead to two with a run off a Falcons error.
 
After getting out of a jam in the top of the seventh, the Captains scored three in the seventh off an RBI single and two-run home run to take a 6-5 lead.
 
The Falcons had the tying run in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth inning, but could not bring in the tying run and the Captains earned the 6-5 win.

Game Two: No. 22 CNU 5, No. 15 Messiah 3

After three and a half scoreless innings, the Captains scored two runs in the fourth off an error to take a 2-0 headed into the fifth.
 
The Captains added their third run of the game in the bottom of the fifth off a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Captains added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth off a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt to give the Captains a 5-0 lead.
 
The Captains held a no-hitter through seven innings, but Cristian Reyna broke up the no-no with a single to lead off the top of the eighth. After a fielder's choice, David Martinez hit an infield single, but the Captains got out the jam and held onto a 5-0 lead.
 
The Falcons looked to make a late comeback in the top of the ninth. Nick Moyer led off the inning with a solo home run to left to put the Falcons on the board. Micah Smith reached on an error and after two strikeouts, the Falcons needed another two-out rally to keep the game going. Cristian Reyna walked, and then Isaiah Parido singled to put the score at 5-2. David Martinez then hit an RBI single to put the tying run on first with two outs. The Captains though got a strikeout to end the game and earn the 5-3 win.
