Baseball Splits Doubleheader in Conference Opener at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – On Saturday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team split their conference opening doubleheader at Widener.
In game one, The Falcons jumped to an early 7-0 lead after the first two innings. The Pride scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to reduce the Falcons lead to four. The Falcons then poured on 11 more runs in the final three innings to earn the 18-4 win. Nick Moyer led the Falcons with two hits and four RBIs. Isaiah Parido added two hits and a run scored. Drew Hurst added a hit and two RBIs. Christian Foltz earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on three walks and four strikeouts.
In game two, the Falcons took an early lead with a run in the third. The Pride scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Both teams scored two in the fifth to put the score at 4-3 headed into the sixth. The Pride scored the final three runs to earn the 7-3 win. Landon Mark led the Falcons with three hits. Drew Hurst hit a two-run home run. David Martinez added a hit and an RBI.
 
Up next, the Falcons host the Pride of Widener University on Sunday, March 15 at 3:00 p.m.

Game One: Messiah 18, Widener 4
The Falcons looked to get an early lead in the top of the first. Isaiah Parido reached on a walk and then David Martinez reached on an error to give the Falcons two early base runners. After both runners advanced into scoring position off an error, Drew Hurst loaded the bases with a hit by pitch. After a strikeout, Nick Moyer and Brayden Burkholder had back-to-back walks to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Matt Luchovick then hit a sacrifice fly to push the Falcons lead to 3-0. After Luke Ott scored a run on an error, Cristian Reyna hit an RBI double to close out the Falcons big first inning with a 6-0 lead.
 
After a scoreless bottom of the first, the Falcons looked to extend their lead in the top of the second. After a strikeout, David Martinez doubled to put a runner on second with one out. Drew Hurst, Carter Reid, and Nick Moyer then had back-to-back walks to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead.
 
After a scoreless third, the Pride looked to get back into the game in the bottom of the fourth. The Pride scored three runs in the fourth on four hits to reduce the Falcons lead to 7-3.
 
The Falcons looked to extend their lead in the top of the fifth. After a lineout, Cristian Reyna walked and then Isaiah Parido singled to put runners on first and second with one out. After a David Martinez walk, Drew Hurst hit a sacrifice fly to push the Falcons lead to 8-3.
 
The Falcons looked to continue to add to their lead in the top of the sixth. After Carter Reid reached on an error, Nick Moyer hit an RBI double to give the Falcons a six-run lead. Brayden Kratz reached on a single and then Matt Luchovick hit an RBI ground out to extend the Falcons lead to 10-3 headed to the bottom of the sixth.
 
The Pride added a run on an RBI double to cut the Falcons lead to 10-4 headed into the final frame.
 
The Falcons capped off the game with an eight-run seventh inning that was capped off by a grand slam from Kyler Parks to give the Falcons the 18-4 win.
 
Stats
Nick Moyer led the Falcons with two hits and four RBIs. Isaiah Parido added two hits and a run scored. Drew Hurst added a hit and two RBIs. Christian Foltz earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on three walks and four strikeouts. Owen Thornton pitched 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen with one strikeout.
 
Game Two: Widener 7, Messiah 3
After two scoreless innings to open the game, the Falcons looked to break the scoreless tie in the top of the third. After a fly out, Isaiah Parido doubled and then stole third. David Martinez then singled to center field to give the Falcons the 1-0 lead.
 
The Pride then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly to give the Pride a 2-1 lead.
 
The Falcons then scored two runs in the top of the fifth with Cristian Reyna walking and then Drew Hurst hitting a two-run home run to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead.
 
The Pride though battled back and scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
 
The Falcons had the tying run on base in multiple innings to close the game, but the Pride scored the final three runs to earn the 7-3 win.
 
Stats
Landon Mark led the Falcons with three hits. Drew Hurst hit a two-run home run. David Martinez added a hit and an RBI. Daniel Knight started for the Falcons on the mound and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, one walk, and one strikeout. Devin Aponte pitched 0.1 innings with a strikeout and a walk.
