Early Offense Powers Falcons Past Widener

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Sunday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team used a strong early offensive performance to defeat the Pride of Widener University, 14-10. The Falcons started the game strong with a six-run inning in the bottom of the second. The Falcons then scored two runs in the next three innings to push the Falcons lead to 12-0 through five innings. The Pride scored three runs, and the Falcons scored a run in the sixth to put the score at 13-3 through six innings of play. The Falcons added another run in the bottom of the seventh to take a commanding 14-3 lead. The Pride looked to battle back with three runs in the eighth and then four runs in the ninth to cut the Falcons lead to four. The Pride had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but Kolten Martin forced a fly out to center and the Falcons earned the 14-10 win. Nick Moyer led the Falcons with three hits, including a solo home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Cristian Reyna totaled two hits, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Matt Luchovick added two hits, including a two-run home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Drew Hurst added a two-run home run. Sawyer Shepherd earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing, three runs on four hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.

Messiah 14, Widener 10
After two scoreless innings to open the game for Sawyer Shepherd, the Falcons looked to take a lead in the bottom of the second. Carter Reid led off the inning with a triple down the left field line. Nick Moyer then hit an RBI double down the left field line to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Matt Luchovick then hit a no-doubt two-run home run to left to extend the Falcons lead to 3-0. After a pop out, Landon Mark reached on an error by the Pride's shortstop. After a stolen base by Mark, he advanced to third on a lineout to right. Cristian Reyna then hit an RBI single to the third base men to extend the Falcons lead to four. After Reyna stole second, Drew Hurst hit a two-run homer to right to push the Falcons lead to 6-0 through two innings.
 
The Falcons looked to extend their lead in the bottom of the third. Carter Reid led off the inning with a double to left center. After a flyout advanced Reid to third, Matt Luchovick hit single to left to extend the Falcons lead to seven. After Luchovick stole second and a lineout, Landon Mark hit an RBI single to left to give the Falcons an 8-0 lead through three innings.
 
The Falcons offense continued to add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. David Martinez hit a sacrifice fly and Nick Moyer hit an RBI single to push the Falcons lead to 10-0 through four innings of play.
 
The Falcons added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a Cristian Reyna sacrifice fly and Isaiah Parido scored on a wild pitch to push the Falcons lead to 12-0.
 
The Pride scored three runs in the sixth to cut the Falcons lead to 12-3 headed into the bottom of the sixth.
 
The Falcons added another run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run from Nick Moyer to extend the Falcons lead to 13-3 headed into the seventh.
 
After a scoreless inning from Kade Cooper on the mound, the Falcons added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Micah Smith to extend the Falcons lead to 14-3.
 
The Pride continued to battle back and scored three runs in the top of the eighth to cut the Falcons lead to eight headed into the bottom of the eighth.
 
After a scoreless inning for the Falcons, the Pride looked for one final chance to comeback in the top of the ninth. The Pride scored four runs before Kolten Martin ended the game by forcing a fly out to give the Falcons the 14-10 win.

Kade Cooper threw 1.2 scoreless innings out of the pen with two strikeouts.
