GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Thursday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team walked-off the Lions of Penn St. Harrisburg to earn the 5-4 win.
After two and half scoreless innings, the Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the third to give Messiah a 2-0 lead. The Lions responded back with two runs to tie the game in top of the fifth. The Falcons answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead. The Lions then scored a run in the sixth and the seventh to tie the game at four. After a couple of scoreless frames, the Falcons walked off the Lions in the bottom of the ninth with a single from
Carter Reid to give the Falcons the 5-4 win.
Isaiah Parido led the Falcons with two hits, two runs, and an RBI.
Cristian Reyna tallied two hits and a run scored.
Drew Hurst added a hit and two RBIs.
Devin Aponte earned the win out of the bullpen, pitching 2.1 innings with three walks and strikeout.
Up next, the Falcons travel to Owings Mills, Md. to take on the Mustangs of Stevenson University on Friday, March 20 at 3:30 p.m.
Messiah 5, Penn St. Harrisburg 4
After a scoreless first inning and top of the first, the Falcons looked to take an early lead in the bottom of the second.
David Martinez led off the inning with a walk. After a strikeout,
Nick Moyer singled past a diving Lions' third baseman to give the Falcons runners on first and second with one out. After a ground out advanced the two runners,
Brayden Burkholder was intentionally walked to load the bases, but the Lions got out of the inning with a fielder's choice to keep the game scoreless through two.
After
Zachary Harris threw another scoreless inning in the top of the third, the Falcons looked to take a lead in the bottom of the third. With one out,
Cristian Reyna singled up the middle to put a runner on first.
Drew Hurst then hit an RBI triple to right to give the Falcons the one-run lead.
David Martinez then hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead through three innings of play.
After a scoreless fourth, the Lions tied the game at two in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run.
The Falcons looked to respond in the bottom of the fifth.
Luke Ott led off the inning reaching on a wild pitch on a strikeout. After Ott stole second,
Isaiah Parido hit an RBI double to left center to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead. After a fly out advanced Ott to third,
Drew Hurst hit a sacrifice fly to right to increase the Falcons lead to 4-2 through the fifth.
The Lions then responded with a run on two hits to cut the Falcons lead to 4-3 headed into the bottom of the sixth.
After a scoreless bottom of the sixth, the Lions then tied the game in the top of the seventh with an RBI double, but
Devin Aponte forced an inning ending ground out with the bases loaded to keep the game tied.
After a scoreless eighth the Lions looked to take the lead in the top of the ninth. With a runner on first, the Lions ripped a ball into the left center gap, but
Joshua Boll made an amazing diving catch, keeping the game tied headed into the bottom of the ninth.
The Falcons looked to end the game in the ninth and led off the inning with a walk from
Isaiah Parido.
Cristian Reyna then singled up the middle, followed by a sacrifice bunt from
Drew Hurst to put runners on second and third with one out. After
David Martinez was intentionally walked,
Carter Reid walked the game off with an RBI single through the left side to give the Falcons the 5-4 win.
