WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Messiah Softball team traveled to the nation's capital earlier today, for a doubleheader against the Cardinals of Catholic University of America, with the teams splitting the two games. In game one, the Falcons took an early lead, but watched it slip away. Heading into the seventh inning down two, the Falcons staged a late comeback to get the 6-5 win.
Rebekah Wiley had the eventual game winning two-RBI single in the seventh.
Allie Book added two hits and two RBIs.
Ava Fair had a hit and two walks, scoring all three times she reached base. In game two, after going down early, the Falcons offense struggled to get back into it, falling 8-0 in six innings.
Allie Book was the lone offensive spark for the Falcons, getting three hits.
Up next, the Falcons are back in action tomorrow at home against Marymount University, for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Game One: Messiah – 6, Catholic – 5
Brielle Rosario and
Ava Fair both walked a stole a base to start the game.
Allie Book then shot a one-out single through the left side to score both runners, quickly giving Messiah a 2-0 lead. The Falcons drew two more walks in the inning but failed to tack on anymore runs. Catholic quickly tied the game, with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first.
In the top of the second,
Ava Fair got on a base with a two-out single.
Fallon Feaser followed with a double into the right center gap, scoring Fair from first, and giving the Falcons the lead once more, 3-2. However, Catholic once again tied it in the bottom half of the inning.
After both pitchers sat the sides down in order in the third,
Brielle Rosario got on base with a two-out triple in the fourth, but Messiah failed to get her home.
After a scoreless bottom of the fourth for Catholic,
Allie Book sent a one-out double to right center, but once again the Falcons couldn't retake the lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Catholic retook the lead, scoring one run on two hits.
After a 1-2-3 inning for the Falcons, Catholic led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homerun to make it 5-3.
Down two heading into the seventh,
Ava Fair drew a one-out walk to get the tying run to the plate.
Fallon Feaser then reached on a fielder's choice, and after some chaos with the throw, Fair came around to score to make it 5-4.
Allie Book then reached on an error. After a pop-up, the Falcons were down to their final out with two runners on base.
Rebekah Wiley came up to the plate, and singled up the middle, scoring both Feaser and Book to give Messiah a 6-5 lead.
Kelli Durbin came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh, putting the Cardinals side down in order, recording the save and securing the Falcons win.

Game Two: Messiah – 0, Catholic – 8 (6 inn.)
After the Falcons were retired in order to start the game, Catholic took a big lead early, scoring five runs on three hits, including a three-run homerun.
Allie Book single to lead off the second, and
Rebekah Wiley doubled to right center to give Messiah two runners in scoring position with no outs, but Messiah failed to get the big hit to cut into the Cardinals lead.
Over the next three innings,
Allie Book and
Brielle Rosario both singled, but neither team produced much offense, with the score still 5-0, heading into the sixth.
In the sixth,
Allie Book added her third hit of the game, but the Falcons still couldn't get on the scoreboard. The Cardinals added three runs in the bottom of the sixth, to win 8-0 in six innings due to the run rule.
