Falcons Cruise Past Highlanders

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team cruised to a 15-0 run-rule win over the Highlanders of Cairn University. After a scoreless first, the Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead. The Falcons scored two in the third to extend their lead to five. The Falcons then scored four in the fourth and six in the fifth to take a 15-0 lead through five innings. The Falcons threw a scoreless sixth and seventh to earn the 15-0 run-rule win. Brayden Burkholder led the Falcons with two hits and three RBIs. Luke Ott totaled two hits and two RBIs. Landon Mark tallied two hits, four runs scored, and an RBI. Nick Moyer added a hit and three RBIs.

Up next, the Falcons travel to York, Pa. to take on the Spartans of York College on Thursday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m.

Messiah 15, Cairn 0 – Final 7 Innings
After two scoreless innings to start the game from Kade Cooper on the mound, the Falcons looked to take a lead in the bottom of the second. Landon Mark led off the inning with a walk and then Brayden Kratz singled to center to put runners on first and third with no outs. Nick Moyer then hit a sacrifice fly to left to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Luke Ott then singled through the right side to put runners on first and second with one out. After a fly out, the Cairn left fielder threw the ball away and both runners advanced to second and third with one out. After Kratz scored on a wild pitch, Connor Voelksen hit an RBI single to push the Falcons lead to 3-0. Isaiah Parido hit a single and Cristian Reyna reached on a hit by pitch, but the Highlanders got out the inning to limit the damage to three.
 
The Falcons looked to extend their lead in the bottom of the third. Landon Mark led off the inning with a single and after a fly out stole second to give the Falcons a runner in scoring position with one out. Nick Moyer then hit an RBI double down the left-field line to push the Falcons lead to 4-0. Luke Ott then hit an RBI single through the left side to give the Falcons a 5-0 lead through three innings.
 
The Falcons looked to continue their momentum at the plate in the bottom of the fourth. After a strikeout, Cristian Reyna hit a triple to deep center. After Drew Hurst reached on a hit by pitch, he stole second, and on the throw to second, Reyna stole home to give the Falcons a 6-0 lead. Landon Mark then walked and Brayden Kratz was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. After Nick Moyer walked to bring in a run, Luke Ott hit a sacrifice fly to right to push the Falcons lead to eight. Brayden Burkholder then hit an RBI single to give the Falcons a 9-0 lead.
 
The Falcons bats continued to add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Hudson Rue brought in Micah Smith with an RBI double to extend the Falcons lead to 10. Landon Mark then hit an RBI single to give the Falcons an 11-run lead. Brody Travagline then hit a single to center that got past the Highlanders' center fielder and Travagline went all around the bases to push the Falcons lead to 13. After Luke Ott reached on an error, Brayden Burkholder hit a two-run home run to left center to give the Falcons a 15-0 lead.
 
Trey Daugherty and Collin Schrim each threw a scoreless inning out of the pen to give the Falcons the 15-0 win.

Nick Moyer added a hit and three RBIs. Hudson Rue, Brody Travagline, and Connor Voelksen each tallied a hit and an RBI. Kolten Martin earned the win on the mound with three innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts. Kade Cooper earned the start and pitched two scoreless innings. Trey Daugherty and Collin Schrim each threw a scoreless inning out of the pen to close the game.
