GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Wednesday evening, the Messiah University men's lacrosse team used a lockdown defensive effort to defeat the Blazers of Hood College, 7-2. Both teams played great defense in the first quarter with the score remaining tied at zero through 15 minutes of play. The Falcons outscored the Mustangs, 3-1 in the second to take a two-goal lead into the half. The Falcons added two goals in the third to extend their lead to 5-1 heading into the final quarter. The Falcons outscored the Blazers by one in the fourth to earn the 7-2 win.
Bobby Berg and
Owen Hammel led the Falcons offense with two goals each.
Michael Cook dished out two assists.
Adam Collison and
Noah Hauf led the Falcons defense with two caused turnovers each.
Jourdain Algarin earned the win in the cage with 13 saves.
Up next, the Falcons travel to St. Davids, Pa. to take on the Eagles of Eastern University at 1:00 p.m.
First Quarter
The Falcons got their offense going in the first with 13 shots and five shots on goal, but Messiah could not get a shot past the Blazers' goalkeeper and the score remained tied at zero headed into the second quarter.
Second Quarter
After a scoreless first, the Falcons got on the board first with a goal from
Bobby Berg by
Michael Cook to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead with 11:30 remaining in the second. Five minutes later,
Quentin Davis scored to push the Falcons lead to 2-0. The Blazers then answered with a goal to cut the Falcons lead to one with five minutes remaining in the half. The Falcons closed out the second strong with a goal from
Brayden Kuhar with just over a minute remaining in the half to take a 3-1 lead at the break.
Third Quarter
After nine minutes of back-and-forth play,
Bobby Berg scored a man-up goal from
Michael Cook to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead. The Falcons added a goal at the end of the third from
Jesse Lynch to extend the Messiah lead to 5-1 headed into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
The Blazers opened the fourth with a goal in the first couple minutes to reduce the Falcons lead to 5-2. The Falcons quickly answered with a goal from
Owen Hammel to push the Falcons lead back to four with 11 minutes to go in the game. Hammel added another goal near the end of the fourth to give the Falcons the 7-2 win.
