Baseball Falls at No. 8 Kean

UNION, N.J. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team dropped a road game at the eighth-ranked Cougars of Kean University, 7-3. The Falcons opened the game strong with a run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars scored in the bottom of the second to tie the game at one. After two scoreless innings, the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. The Falcons scored a run in the top of the sixth, but the Cougars responded with three more runs in the bottom half to take a 7-2 lead. The Falcons scored a run in the top of the eighth, but the Cougars prevented any more runs from scoring and earned the 7-3 win. Cristian Reyna led the Falcons with two hits and two RBIs. Carter Reid tallied two hits. Drew Hurst added a hit and an RBI.
 
Up next, the Falcons host the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m.
 
No. 8 Kean 7, Messiah 3
The Falcons looked to open the game strong in the top of the first. Isaiah Parido led off the game with a double to right center. Cristian Reyna hit an RBI single to left center to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
 
After a couple of scoreless frames, the Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the second on a solo home run.
 
After two and a half scoreless innings, the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
 
The Falcons looked to respond in the top of the sixth. With one out, Cristian Reyna singled through the left side. Reyna then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch to put a runner on third with one out. Drew Hurst then hit an RBI double to cut the Kean lead to 4-2.
 
The Cougars though responded with another three-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-2 lead.
 
The Falcons added a run on a Cristian Reyna sacrifice fly, but could not score any more runs and the Cougars earned the 7-3 win.
 
Stats
Cristian Reyna led the Falcons with two hits and two RBIs. Carter Reid tallied two hits. Drew Hurst added a hit and an RBI. Devin Aponte earned the start on the mound, pitching five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and 10 strikeouts. Owen Thornton pitched two scoreless innings out of the pen with a strikeout.
