GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Saturday afternoon, the fifth-ranked Messiah University women's soccer team used a late goal from
Addi Martin to defeat the Violets of New York University (NYU), 2-1. The first half started with both teams playing tight defense with only two shots in the first 32 minutes. The Falcons broke the scoreless tie in the 33rd minute with a goal from
Molly Adams by
Nikki Davis to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead at the break. After some more tight play, the Violets tied the game with a second-chance goal off a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. The Falcons responded in the 81st minute with the game-winner from
Addi Martin by
Tessa Groff to earn the 2-1 win.

First Half
After some back and forth play, the Violets looked for a chance to break the scoreless tie in the 17th minute. The Violets sent a long-range shot on goal, but
Ellie Ockrin was positioned perfectly to make the save and keep the Violets off the board. After some more tight defensive play from both sides, the Falcons looked to break the scoreless tie in the 33rd minute.
Riley Craley started the offensive break, creating a turnover on the defensive end, and quickly finding
Nikki Davis in the midfield. Davis then quickly sent a through ball, that
Molly Adams chased down towards the top of the box. Adams beat the Violets' last defense and sent a one-time into the back of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons added another shot that went high to close the first half with a 1-0 lead.
Second Half
The Falcons offense looked to add an insurance goal early in the second half.
Hannah Lashley and
Brittany Hoffman each tallied a shot on goal, but the Violets' goalkeeper made each save to hold the Falcons' lead to 1-0 in the 59th minute. The Falcons continued to control the possession in the second half, but the Violets got a break with a handball in the box to earn a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. After the first opportunity was saved by
Ellie Ockrin on an amazing diving stop, the Violets' followed the chance, and put the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at one. The Falcons looked for a chance in the 81st minute to break the tie. The Falcons attack put pressure on the Violets' defense and caused a turnover near the top-right of the box.
Tessa Groff sent a pass towards the corner to
Skylar Hynson. After a NYU defender poked the ball away from Hynson, Groff followed the play with a high ball into the center of the box.
Addi Martin jumped up and headed the ball into the top-right corner of the goal to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead. The Falcons defense shut down the Violets for the remaining time to earn the 2-1 win.
