Messiah University Sports Medicine - Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need to have my information completed in order to be cleared for my sport?
The window to complete forms is from May 1 - August 1. The deadline for paperwork completion is AUGUST 1st. If you fail to complete paperwork before this deadline, your participation in your sport activity may be delayed. This deadline is for ALL sports (Fall, Winter, and Spring).

How do I fill out my pre-season forms?
Visit the “required forms” tab on the Sports Medicine webpage. It gives step-by-step instructions for getting started and completing your required forms. There are separate instructions for new/transfer athletes and returning athletes to help you to understand how to establish your profile and upload the correct information and documents.  If you are having difficulty, please contact Megan Fowler for further help.

What if I get injured while participating in an intercollegiate sport?
For non-emergencies situations, please contact your athletic trainer to inform him or her of the injury via email or sign-up for an appointment. Please make an appointment with one of the athletic trainers via the ATS scheduling site. Your athletic trainer will begin with an evaluation determining what impairments must be addressed with treatment and/or refer you to appropriate medical care. Messiah University athletic training works closely with various physicians and specialists for a variety of conditions. We will provide you with suggestions, but ultimately you may see the physician of your choosing.

Who’s the athletic trainer for my team?
All athletic trainers at Messiah Sports Medicine can see any patient, but each athletic trainer has a primary sport assignment. Our staff will work to communicate together when you see an athletic trainer that is not the primary athletic trainer for your sport. Please don’t schedule an appointment just because the athletic trainer for your team is unavailable!

How do I make an appointment with an athletic trainer?
Use the ATS site for scheduling appointments. Click here or visit Gomessiah.com and click on Messiah Sports Medicine. On the Sports Medicine homepage, click the ATS link. An instruction sheet for making appointments will be located on the homepage prior to the arrival of fall student-athletes, so check in again soon.

Does Messiah pay my medical bills?
If you need medical care that results in medical expenses, Messiah University does provide an excess accident insurance policy to help defray the cost of medical care that is the direct result of participation in intercollegiate athletics. Medical bills are submitted to the student-athlete’s primary insurance carrier (personal or parents/guardians) first. The university’s athletic accident insurance is an excess policy and takes effect after bills have been considered by your primary insurance carrier. Please be aware that Messiah University does not pay for any athlete’s medical expenses. The athlete's primary insurance and athletic excess accident insurance coordinate to pay appropriate injury medical expenses. Any remaining expenses become the responsibility to the athlete and his or her parents/guardians.

Is secondary insurance the same as school insurance?
Athletic accident insurance is not the same as the school’s health insurance that Messiah students have the option to purchase from the Engle Health Center. The athletic accident insurance is provided but is limited to injuries that result directly from participation in athletics. Coverage by this policy is limited to athletic injuries occurring during official practices, competitions, and travel to and from competitions. The excess accident insurance does not cover illnesses, skin infections, training on your own, or captain led practices, nor does it cover overuse injuries or non-athletic related injuries. I see that I must pay $25 for the secondary insurance. Why must I pay this and where can I pay this?
This charge is specific to student-athletes, and only student-athletes have this benefit for additional insurance for injuries related to your participation in intercollegiate athletics. Due to this fact, this small charge is to contribute to the insurance premium. It did not appear to be fair for all students to contribute to with tuition and fees when only student-athletes specifically benefit from this expense. You will be able to pay this when you arrive on campus, as there will be a charge to your student account after July 1.
